A Study of Infants' Language Development According to Infants' Temperament and Maternal Characteristics · Parenting Behavior원문보기

This study has a purpose on identifying the influence of infants’ innate temperament and maternal characteristics · parenting attitude on infants’ language development.
In the process of this study, the researcher sampled their mothers and 111 infants aged between 12 months to 36 months from 6 infants special nurseries in Seoul, Yeong-in, Hanam and Busan. In order to measure infants’ language development, the researcher used ‘SELSI’ developed by Kim Young-tae, Kim Kyung-hee, Yun Hae-ryeon and Kim Hwa-soo(2003). For the measurement of infants’ language development, ‘Toddler Temperament Scale(TTS)’ translated by Baek Kyung-suk(1996) was used, and for the measurement on maternal characteristics, ‘Korean Enneagram Personality Type Inspection(KEPTI)’ has been used. Further, in order to measure parenting behavior, Korean Maternal Behavior Research Instrument(MBRI), previously used by Bae Mun-ju(2004), was used. The data collected were processed for T-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient analysis and multiple linear regression analysis.
The result of the study can be summarized as follows ;
First, infants’ language development had no manifest statistical correlation with their gender and maternal factors(as academic ability, employment, age and income).
Second, in respect to infants’ temperament and language development, infants with regular(easy and well-going) temperament showed positive development level in general than did the infants with particular(difficult) type of temperament. Moreover, language development showed evident negative correlation with infants’ temperament. In case of gender’s effect on temperament and language development, female infants showed apparent difference depending on KMBCDI and SELSI, while male infants showed apparent difference on KMBCDI.
Third, in terms of language development depending upon maternal characteristics, infants under mothers tending to be emotional showed positive language development to a certain extent. Moreover, in case of infants aged under 24 months, infants with emotional characteristic type showed apparently high rate on KMBCDI and SELSI depending on maternal characteristics. Further, for infants aged under 24 months, maternal characteristics and language development showed apparent negative correlation between.
Fourth, in terms of language development depending upon parenting behavior, affective-disciplinary parenting behavior had positive KMBCDI development rate to a certain extent, and rejective-autonomous parenting behavior had certain tendency to show positive SELSI development rate. After dividing sample groups according to their age(months), in case of infants aged under 24 months, infants who were raised under affective-disciplinary parenting behavior had significantly high rate of language development in SELSI. In case of infants aged under 24 months, parenting behavior showed apparent negative correlation with language development.
In conclusion, whereas infants’ demographic factors did not demonstrate apparent influence on infants’ language development, infants’ temperament does give apparent difference to their language development. In particular, infants aged under 24-months receive higher influence by maternal characteristic and parenting behavior than infants’ temperament.
