Today we need abilities not only to collect, search and analyze information but also to produce new knowledge by ourselves and solve problems in a creative and logical manner so that we can survive in this society of knowledge and information. Programming education which enables computers to learn algorithms to solve problems, that is software education, is suggested by a number of studies as the most proper means to improve a high level of creative and logical thinking. So many countries are developing and implementing software education courses. Catching up with this global trend, Korea is also developing software education courses and strives to foster talents for this new era of software by designating schools that will lead software education. Students can obtain knowledge of grammatical and logical structures of programming languages by means of programming education and improve their problem-solving abilities and logical thinking through experiences in using algorithms to solve problems based on logical and organized learning as well. Many of the studies have focused on programming education but few of them described comparison of various educational tools. Thus, it is difficult to select educational tools appropriate for academic levels, tendencies or learning purposes of individual students. This study was intended to provide programming education for elementary school students using languages including Entry and Scratch, and compare and analyze their logical thinking before and after the education respectively. As both Entry and Scratch involve coding in which students combine blocks with algorithms embedded, those who are not experienced in programming languages can easily and interestingly learn them. In order to perform this study, 52 sixth-graders from an elementary school located in Seoul were selected as participants in different experiment groups of either A (26 students) or B (26 students). GALT (Group Assessment of Logical Thinking) was performed against both groups A and B before the experiment in order to secure their equivalence. Each group completed 8 sessions of programming education for 3 weeks with Entry and Scratch respectively. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of programming education, matched pairs t-test was carried out against grades for logical thinking before and after the experiment. In addition, a survey was carried out before and after the experiment in order to examine the levels of interest in programming education and their changes. The result of this study indicates that both groups had increased averages of grades for logical thinking after the experiment and, in particular, for the subcategory of logical thinking, the group which learned Entry showed significant increase in probability and combination whereas the group which learned Scratch showed overall increase in all subcategories. In addition, both group showed increased levels of interest in programming education. This result suggests that both languages are adequate to improve logical thinking. The difference between these two languages is that Entry is more appropriate for increasing specific subcategories of logical thinking while Scratch is more appropriate for increasing overall subcategories. In addition, Entry and Scratch were developed to make elementary school students easily and interestingly learn those languages in that both increased the levels of interest in programming education.
