Recently, more gifted education programs have been expanded because of the increasing importance placed on human resource development and building students' future. Students can learn how to think creatively, as well as, expand and develop their knowledge in various school subjects and academic curriculum through gifted education programs. With an increasing demand for gifted education programs, my research study intends to examine gifted education programs and their effects. Though, most gifted programs in elementary school mathematics are limited and at times, they replicate existing school program topics. So in this study, the researcher created a program, which used new content known as taxi geometry, which encouraged high mathematical creativity for elementary school gifted students in mathematics and evaluated gifted students' reactions and feedback of the program. Research questions of this study are as follows: Research Question 1: Is the content of the taxi geometry program suitable for mathematically gifted elementary students? Research Question 2: Are the program methods of taxi geometry suitable for mathematically gifted elementary students? Research Question 3: What are the cognitive and affective effects of the program on mathematically gifted elementary students? In order to solve the problem, research was carried out and analysis was done on taxicab geometry theory and mathematical literature creativity. Afterwards, a gifted education program in mathematics for elementary school students was developed. The program was administered to a total of 80 students at the Education Institute for the Gifted as a part of the Seoul Metropolitan City Seoul Mathematics Gifted Education Program for fifth grade and sixth grade students. Also, in 2015, grade 4 and grade 5 elementary school students from a gifted class at Gabong Elementary School participated in this program. Researchers made observations as participants. To collect data, researchers also utilized instructional materials including a video taken of the program, student lesson journals, and activity worksheets. Furthermore, they asked students to complete a questionnaire about the program. The researchers classified the data they collected according to cognitive and affective components of mathematical creativity. Then, a case study was conducted to evaluate the effects and reactions on students from the programs. Firstly, the taxicab geometry program at the elementary level involves distance in taxicab geometry, taxi polygons, taxi circles, and taxi perpendicular bisectors. In taxicab geometry, the concepts of points and lines are the same in Euclidean geometry. So students were able to draw a line connecting a point at one point and calculate the distance between two points without difficulty. In addition, because the concepts of polygons are the same in taxicab geometry and Euclidean geometry, students were able to understand the principles of triangles, squares, diamonds, circles and vertical bisectors, which are already a part of the general elementary school curriculum. As for the taxi geometry concepts, the gifted students were able to understand and define them because some of the same principles were taught to them in Euclidean geometry. During this program, unlike Euclidean geometry, gifted students explored different shapes and their properties and how interesting these differences were. Secondly, the taxicab geometry program helped gifted students make associations to real-life problems and helped them find solutions to them. And the program directly enhanced students' motivation and drive to learn. Taxicab geometry is not classified as an Euclidean geometry theory. The theory is applied to how a city and its streets appear when taking a taxi cab. So the first activity in the introductory lesson presented in the program tackles urban geography problems related to the real world, such as problems encountered by the locations of a family and the construction of a power plant to attract the attention of students. Through these authentic real-life problems, students could better relate to the different scenarios presented in the program and had the opportunity to solve these problems more proactively. Also, to fix the problems introduced in the activity, students built a new facility in the city with the purpose of facilitating efficient movement between distances between buildings using a taxicab plane. Through this activity, students checked and applied their understanding of taxicab geometry. As a result, many of the students were more intrinsically motivated to learn. Thirdly, the taxi geometry program is an effective way to grasp the essence of mathematics and deductive thinking, and it can raise students’ proactive inquiry. In the taxicab geometry program, students observed that when the concept of distance had changed, the shortest distance and appearance and properties of shape were changed. While observing these changes, students gained insight about the fundamentals of mathematics. Some students who participated in the program realized that they can be mathematicians through discovering the significance of mathematics and why it's important to learn. Because of the nature and structure of the curriculum, the taxicab geometry program can inspire active exploration and intellectual curiosity in students. Through the taxicab geometry program, mathematically gifted elementary school students were having fun learning and they discovered mathematical rules and principles from a variety of taxicab situations. Along those lines, students were able to transfer the habits, attitudes, and thinking that they learned through the program to real-life situations such as following directions on a city map. This has significance in that it enables students to think creatively through math and understand the nature of mathematics. The taxicab geometry program can be expanded to other schools and utilized in many other places in the future. And a variety of different programs on different topics should be developed for mathematically gifted elementary school students.
