The Relationship between Math anxiety and Mathematical Performance for young Children : Focusing on Formal and Informal Mathematic problems원문보기

The present study examined relationship between math anxiety and math performance in Korean elementary students. In most of the previous studies, researchers focused on the relationship between math anxiety and formal mathematical performance, although mathematical reasoning includes both formal(which is trained at school) and informal mathematics(which can be acquired in everyday context). Thus, the current study examined the relationship between math anxiety and mathematical performance both for formal and informal contexts. Children aged from 8 to 9(N = 147) completed measuring math anxiety, using Korean version of Scale for Early Math Anxiety(translated and adjusted version of SEMA(Wu, Barth, Amin, Malcarne, & Menon 2012 for Korean students) and their mathematical performance were tested in formal and informal contexts. Participants’ general anxiety was also measured using RCMAS-K in order to control their trait anxiety. Our results revealed that math anxiety has significant negative relationship both with formal and informal mathematical performance, even after children’s trait anxiety is controlled. Our results also revealed that math anxiety had higher relationship with formal mathematical performance than with informal mathematical performance.
