This paper performed a study on the examination technique for the fire behavior and carbonization pattern of a flammable liquid. Fire tests were performed in a comparted regular hexagonal test building with a side length of 10[m]. Fifty milliliters 50[ml] of gasoline, kerosene and diesel oil were used as a flammable liquids for the fire tests, respectively. As a flooring material, vinyl floor covering, laminate flooring and carpeting whose side length is 1 meter were used. Square cotton pieces with a side length and weight of 10[cm] and 3[g], respectively, were used for the tests. Pictures of flames from the fire were taken using digital and video cameras. In addition, the infrared distribution of fire heat was measured in real time using a temperature measuring system and temperature sensors were arranged vertically at 20[cm] intervals. The carbonization patterns of the flooring materials were taken by a digital camera for analysis and the cross-sectional structure was analyzed using a stereoscopic microscope. The temperature, humidity and wind velocity of the test building were maintained at 12~14[℃], 61~65[%] and 0.3~0.5[m/s], respectively. A portable gas torch was used for ignition. After filling glass containers with 50[ml] of kerosene and diesel oil, a flame was applied for 30 seconds using a portable gas torch, which resulted in the failure of ignition. However, in the case of the gasoline, the flooring material was ignited, maintaining burning for 568 seconds. The burning time measured after igniting the carpet by spraying 50ml of gasoline on it was 263 seconds. When 180 seconds has elapsed, the flame was activated again, growing bigger. The ignition test performed by spraying 50[ml] of gasoline on the cotton pieces whose sides are 10[cm] long and weight is 3[g], and which is placed on a vinyl floor covering, laminate floor and carpet, respectively, shows that all of them ignited. The burning time measured by igniting the cotton pieces placed on the carpet after spraying 50[ml] of gasoline on it is 320 seconds and when it has elapsed 165 seconds, the flame which had been reduced was activated again, growing bigger. When burning the vinyl floor covering, laminate floor and carpet after spraying 50[ml] of gasoline on them, the height of the peak flame was 1,600[mm] for the laminate floor, 1,500[mm] for the vinyl floor covering, and 1,100[mm] for the carpet. And the height of the mean flame when burning the carpet was 800[mm] and the height of the peak flame was 300[mm] after the flame had been activated again. When burning the vinyl floor covering, laminate floor and carpet after placing and igniting the same size piece of cotton on them with 50[ml] of gasoline being sprayed on it, the height of the peak flame was 1,300 for the laminate floor, 1,200 for the vinyl floor covering, and 900[mm] for the carpet. In addition, when burning the vinyl floor covering, laminate floor and carpet after placing the same cotton pieces on them with 50[ml] of gasoline being sprayed on it, the height of the mean flame was 800[mm] and the peak flame height was 400[mm] after the flame, which had been reduced, was activated again. When gasoline, kerosene and diesel oil are burned, the color of the flame is orange. The shape of the flame is characterized by the mixed shape of a governing turbulent flow flame and a laminar flow flame at the lower part of the flame. The smoke density was analyzed by applying the Ringelmann chart[%]. The smoke density at the peak flame and mean flame was governed by 10~20[%] of black color while it is 10~60[%] when the flame is reduced. When burning the gasoline sprayed on the vinyl floor covering, the smoke density is the highest (60[%]) when the flame is reduced., and when burning the gasoline contained in a glass container, it is 40[%] when the flame is reduced. However, at the end of the burning, the gasoline burned in the glass container and on the vinyl floor covering and laminate floor leaves white smoke. When the 50[ml] of gasoline sprayed on the vinyl floor covering, laminate floor and carpet is ignited and burned, the length of the bottom side of the flame was 430[mm] for the laminate floor, 380[mm] for the vinyl floor covering, and 240[mm] for the carpet. When 50[ml] of gasoline sprayed on the carpet is burned, the thermal burn pattern of the flame was of a narrow and long shape, and in the case of the laminate floor, it was of a wide and cylindrical shape. When the 50ml of gasoline sprayed on the vinyl floor covering, laminate floor and carpet is ignited and burned, the peak temperature of the flame was 900[℃] for the laminate floor, 810[℃] for the vinyl floor covering, and 850[℃] for the carpet. And when 180 seconds has elapsed after the 50[ml] of gasoline sprayed on the carpet was ignited and burned, the flame which had been reduced was activated again and the peak temperature was 210[℃]. The result of analysis on the carbonization pattern of the vinyl floor covering after the 50[ml] of gasoline sprayed on it was ignited and burned shows the length of carbonization was 600[mm] in width and 380[mm] in length and the area of carbonization was 1,000[mm2]. The deepest carbonization was formed inside the boundary surface. The result of analysis on the carbonization pattern of the carpet after the 50[ml] of gasoline sprayed on it was ignited and burned shows the length of carbonization was 280[mm] in width and 250[mm] in length and the area of carbonization was 400[mm2]. The deepest carbonization was formed at the center in the cylindrical shape. The cross-section of a normal vinyl floor covering consists of a coating layer, white boundary layer and uniform void layer, in that order. In the case of the upper part of the carbonized vinyl floor covering, the coating layer is deformed into a carbonized layer due to fire heat and also the color of the boundary layer is a clearer white. The void layer has almost no difference from that of a normal product. The cross-section of a normal laminate floor consists of a case-hardening layer, buffer layer and underlying layer, in that order. In the case of the cross-section of the carbonized laminate floor, the color of each layer is discolored. However, it can be seen that its structure has almost no difference from that of a normal product. The cross-section of a normal carpet consists of thin vinyl wires, bonding layer, case-hardening layer, buffer layer and underlying layer, in that order. In the case of the cross-section of the carbonized carpet, the thin vinyl wires and bonding layer are burned by fire heat. In addition, the case-hardening layer is severely carbonized, and the buffer layer and underlying layer are also partially carbonized and discolored. As can be seen from the above results, the fire test conducted in a comparted space proves that even though same flammable liquid is used, there are differences in the characteristics of flame height, peak temperature, burning time, thermal burn pattern, surface and cross-section, etc., depending on the combustible materials and burning conditions. Therefore, it is thought that these results can be utilized to analyze, and investigate the cause and patterns of arson and accidental fire by flammable liquid.
