Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been widely used for portable electric devices such as mobile phones, laptops, digital cameras. In recent years, the use of LIBs has been expanded to large-sized applications like HEVs (Hybrid Electric Vehicles), EVs (Electric Vehicles), and ESSs (Energy Storage Systems). For this regards, lithium ion batteries have required larger capacity, higher power, longer cycle ability, and more safety than small-sized batteries. Among those factors, safety issues are the most important factor because unsafe batteries could threaten people’s life in case of fire and explosion events. However, the safety issues have not been fully secured due to lots of problems caused by flammable organic solvents, thermally unstable cathodes and separators, as well as cell design issues. Ceramic Coated separators have been widely considered to improve the safety of lithium-ion batteries because they have shown thermally stable properties, enhanced wettability, improved ionic conductivity as well. RF-sputtering deposition is one of the effective methods to make a ceramic Coated polyethylene separator because the thickness of ceramic layer on the separator could be easily controlled in a few micron scale. However, polyethylene (PE) separator has shrinkage issues under the high-power sputtering systems. To overcome this problem, we used polypropylene (PP) separator to reduce the shrinkage effect under high-power RF-sputtering conditions. Consequently, in this study, we have demonstrated the effect of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) Coated PP separator under high power sputtering conditions for safe lithium-ion battery system. Due to the thermally stable properties of PP separator, comparing to the conventional PE separator, the total shrinkage area of PP separator under high-power sputtering was reduced. PP separator Coated with Al2O3 maintained their initial dimensions even after high temperature exposure at 140 ℃ for 30 min (Bare: 19.4 %, ceramic coated separator (CCS): 0 %). The sputtered Al2O3 layer effectively modified the surface properties of a PP separator from hydrophobic to hydrophilic with improving its wettability. In addition, a Al2O3 coating could improve the rate capability (10 C Rate; 111 %) compared with a bare PP separator under a high current density since the layer did not require additional use of polymeric binder materials, which usually inhibit the formation of pore structures in microporous membranes.
