The number of single-person households in South Korea is increasing rapidly, and expected to reach 34.3% of the entire population by 2035. Most single-person households are college students or workers in their 20s and 30s who moved out of their parents’ houses and live in Gosiwon, semi-underground apartments, and rooftops with poor lighting, insulation and ventilation. The public sector has planned and begun to supply shared housing, such as ‘Durae houses’ and ‘Social houses,’ as an alternative solution to housing problems of young people. Shared house is a new form of housing that combined housing with sharing economy, allowing people to share living room, kitchen, laundry room, etc. with other residents. As the residents share the space, the economic burden as well as other problems of single-person households such as isolation and loneliness are reduced and people can share various hobbies and leisure activities. However, it is still in its initial stage in South Korea. As a result, shared housing and relevant laws have not been fully established as a system. Private businesses began to remodel old houses, Gosiwon, and abandoned buildings into a shared house that is increasingly in demand, and, sometimes, offer small areas that fall short of the minimum residential area or rent a bed in a living room. This study proposed essential physical space and minimum design standards for shared houses, which are increasingly supplied by both the private and public sectors. In this study, a shared house was defined as being shared by people in their 20s and 30s who are not related, each of whom has a person bedroom and share the same bathroom, living room, kitchen, etc. As the subjects, seven private shared houses that are currently operating and four public-rental shared houses that have been either planned or currently used were analyzed. Also, the study reviewed the research on domestic Shared house and similar housing type of ‘Modeling and Simulation of Gang-So[强’小] Housing’ and ‘Design and Performance Guideline for Public Rental Housing' by the Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation. Furthermore, refer the case of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) of Northern Ireland. Essential elements in design standards were identified base d on the literature review and shared houses in South Korea, and based on those elements, the average of the 11 shared houses was calculated. Additionally, literature related to similar housing types was reviewed in order to set detailed standards for designing public shared houses. The public sector should clearly define the terms that often cause confusion, by recognizing shared housing as a new type of housing, and establish relevant laws and systems in order to eradicate inadequate shared houses supplied in the private market. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to draw attention to the need to enact laws on shared housing and provide database that can be used for categorizing shared housing as a new type of housing in the future.
