Artificial night lighting, as a source of light pollution, is known to affect important biological functions in plants and animals/humans. It also affects environmental and ecological problems including the daily and annual cycle in wildlife. However, understanding of the effects of chronic exposure to artificial night lighting is still largely unknown. The present study was undertaken to investigate impacts of artificial night lighting on physiological and biochemical changes of yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) exposed to either natural night or night with artificial lighting during three-year cycles. Particularly, these findings highlight the following major outcomes: (1) artificial night lighting acts as a major risk factor for potential mechanistic roles through disruptions of circadian and circannual rhythms in yellow-poplar, (2) it also leads to reduced levels of starch synthesis during the day as well as feedback inhibition of starch degradation during the night, resulting in carbon starvation stress, (3) abnormal stomatal movement occurs in plants exposed to artificial night lighting, resulting in ABA-mediated dysfunctional stomatal behavior, (4) Chla/Chlb ratio decreases in plants exposed to artificial night lighting, indicating the dynamic increase of Chlb as a consequence of the photosystem II antenna size adjustment, (5) these results indicate that the activities of the donor and acceptor sides of PSII are inhibited during artificial night lighting, showing the inhibition of photosystem II electron transport, (6) artificial lighting during the night results in ROS-mediated lipid peroxidation, (7) nighttime artificial lighting leads to the dramatic disruption in chloroplast ultrastructure, (8) artificial night lighting results in downregulation of photosynthesis, and (9) artificial night lighting, especially including chronic low intensities of light, can dramatically affect plant growth, via modification of the photosynthetic light harvesting apparatus. Results of this study showed that artificial night lighting has significant impacts on physiological and biochemical changes of yellow-poplar seedlings, especially the circadian disruption between dusk and dawn, and highlights a damage mechanism for potential impacts under artificial night lighting. Future studies should be evaluated to understand the eco-physiological impacts of nighttime artificial lighting in the natural urban environment and interactions with other photochemical pollutants so that effective pollution prevention practices can be developed.
