Bio-drying is a biologically drying treatment, which can reduce the waste landfill and enhance the lower heating value of solid refused fuel(SRF) higher by removing water of waste in mechanical-biological treatment(MBT) system. In this process, the drying phenomenon occurs due to the water removal directly by high air-flow rate, and is promoted by high temperature caused by heat from bio-degradation. In this paper, initial moisture contents are 30, 40, 50 and 60% and air-flow rate is set up differently according to initial moisture contents. This paper aims to investigate the effect of two factors on airspace temperature, CO2 generation rate(g kg-1―VS day-1), volatile solid loss rate(g kg-1―VS day-1) and water removal rate(g kg-1―water day-1). Mass balance and heat balance is established for this analysis. As initial moisture content increases, the maximum value of airspace temperature and the maximum value of CO2 generation rate also increased, which means the microbic activity is active. Accordingly, the maximum of cumulative volatile solid loss rate is higher, but the maximum of cumulative water removal rate is lower because the ratio of bio-generated water to initial water is higher. This appears that the drying efficiency has limits as the proportion of conduction and convection heat loss to total heat loss is higher, while the ratio of heat for evaporation to heat from biodegradation is lower. As air-flow rate increases, the maximum value of airspace temperature and the maximum value of CO2 generation rate decreased, which means the microbic activity is controlled. Accordingly, the maximum of cumulative volatile solid loss rate is lower, but the maximum of cumulative water removal rate is higher because the ratio of outlet water to initial water is higher. This appears that the drying phenomenon occurs directly by high air-flow rate as the heat accumulation in a reactor decreases and the ratio of heat for evaporation to heat from biodegradation is higher. In conclusion, the maximum of cumulative volatile solid loss rate is lower as initial moisture content and air-flow rate is lower. The maximum of cumulative water removal rate is higher as initial moisture content is lower or air-flow rate is higher. Therefore, initial moisture content has to be lower and air-flow rate has to be higher for high drying efficiency. However, the air-flow rate has maximum limit for bio-drying process promoted by microbic activity.
