Abstract
This research has been done to study in depth on composers’ background and analysis on relationships between the melody and lyrics, while preparing for my degree recital. Composers presented in this paper are Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847), Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), Jacques Ibert (1890-1962), Сергея Рахманинов (Sergei Rachmaninoff, 1873-1943), and Umberto Giordano (1867-1948).
Jakob Ludvig Mendelssohn (1809-1847) wrote Elijah (1846), which is one of the the most significant three oratorios during the nineteenth century. Based on the life of prophet Elijah in the Old Testament, it is a three-hour long masterpiece, which represents well Mendelssohn’s compositional styles, compromising musical elements from both Classical and Romantic eras. Throughout the work, the composer uses contrapuntal compositional style as well as lyrical and harmonic languages that are significant characteristics of Romanticism.
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) composed his first song cycle An die ferne Geliebte (op. 98) based on the text by Aloys Lsodor Jeitteles (1764-1858). Compiled with six songs that are in a strophic form, it is considered as the most significant song cycle ever written in the music history. The piano accompaniment has its own identity that is more independent from the vocal line. Also, Beethoven maximizes musical subtlety and emotional expression throughout the music. The duration of the whole cycle is about thirteen minutes.
Comprised with four songs, Chanson de Don Quichotte (1932) was written by Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) based on poems of Alexandre Arnoux (1884-1973) and Pierre de Rosard (1524-1585). Overall, the music does not follow conventional musical forms while the contents and rhythm are observed as sarcasm. Originally commissioned for a lower voice, the composer writes songs that are suitable for the low voice range. In addition, it is apparent that the composer tries to depict a distinctive Spanish flavor.
Most of Rachmaninoff’s (Сергея Рахманинов, 1873-1943) songs were written before his exile to the United States, which was considerably his prolific year. Мюссе, op. 21, no. 6 (1902) was set to the poems of Alfred de Musset (1810-1857), which were translated by Aleksey Apukhtin (1840-1893). Songs follow general characteristics of the nineteenth century music. It, however, offers rather operatic atmosphere due to the scattered sixteenth notes and regular, yet impetuous accompaniment. Rachmaninoff portrays the bell sound of the Russian Orthodox Church in the piano accompaniment, portraying solitude, grief, mournful lyricism, and spatial hollowness.
Lastly, the opera Andrea Chénier (1896) was composed by one of the leading verismo opera composers, Umberto Giordano (1867-1948). The libretto was written by Italian writer Luigi Illica (1857-1919), based on the life of French poet, Andrea Chénier (1762-1794), who lived during the French Revolution in the eighteenth century. One of the arias of Carlo Gérrard “Nemico della patria” enhances realistic and theatrical elements, based on the verismo spirit.
