This study was to examine whether auditory stimulation with metronomic beat is effective in decreasing social anxiety. For this purpose, 215 college and graduate schools in Seoul participated to survey and 22 were selected as high social anxiety group and 20 were selected as low social anxiety group. In each group, experimental group and control group were randomly assigned at the same number. In the experiment, TSST-G, a structured anxiety-inducing task, are used to induce anxiety through interviews and mental calculation. After the anxiety induction task, the experimental group heard 30 bpm metronome stimulation for 5 minutes. To measure physiological symptoms, heart rate was measured every second from the beginning to the end of the experiment, and the task performance section was divided and each section’s heart rate averages were obtained. In addition, participants were asked to rate the scores of anxiety, tension, and avoidance at the task performance section as a score of 0 to 100. Post-event rumination was measured by PERS after mental calculation, after stimulation/rest, and after debriefing section. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, changes of heart rate average between interview and stimulation/rest section showed significant difference between the experimental group and the control group. Second, using the same analytical method of the first result to the high social anxiety group and the low social anxiety group each, only the low social anxiety group showed the significant difference. These results indicated that auditory stimulation with metronomic beat had an effect of reducing social anxiety, and it was more effective in those who has low social anxiety. This study has significance in that it showed that even simple auditory stimulation such as metronomic beat can lead to changes in autonomic nervous system activity. In addition, it is expected that it can be used as an anxiety reduction strategy which can be easily used by an individual without an expert, or it can help to develop a more effective way to intervene to the physiological response of social anxiety. Finally, limitations of this study and suggestions for future research were discussed.
