An Analysis of Grammar Items in the English Textbooks and Learners' Responses
This study aims to examine the grammar items in the 1st grade of middle school English textbooks, and their learners' responses. Grammar gains its prominence in language teaching, particularly in English as a foreign language (EFL). Without a good knowledge of grammar, learners’ language development will be severely constrained. Practically, when teaching grammar, learners are taught rules of language known as sentence patterns. Even when learners are taught for communicative use, learners should also learn grammar items to be able to speak in more structured and complex form of English. However in 2009, when Korean National Education Department revised the National English Curriculum, they announced that 'teaching of communicative English language' should be taught without focusing on grammar forms. Classroom English Teaching methods since the establishment of National English Curriculum have not focused on communicative use of language. but just on the grammar. So instead, they gave the simple list of example sentences that can show various language forms. But the recently revised National English Curriculum of 2015, section regarding "teaching without focusing on forms" was deleted and the new suggestive standard elementary, middle, and high school levels of grammar were defined. This study aims to analyze the grammar items of example language-form sentences suggested in revised National English Curriculum in 2015 and find differences with the grammar items in various English textbooks. English textbooks are published in 14 different publishers. This study chose textbooks of 1st grade of middle school level. And to test for the need of grammar items in the textbooks, the study plans to examine students with two different test questions; one with grammar items found in the textbook and another with items not found in the textbook. The result suggests the learners' knowledge level of grammar and the magnitude of need in the textbook's grammar factors. The outcomes of this study are as follows. In the National English Curriculum in 2015, there were 40 different categories of grammar items which contained 4 to 37 specific grammar forms of that category. The grammar items were verb tenses, infinitive, gerund, participle, auxiliary verb, noun, article, pronoun, preposition, conjunction, inversion, ellipsis, etc. Then the extracted grammar items were categorized into different school levels: 74 elementary school level, 192 middle school level, and 83 high school level. With the test results, With the results, grammar items in the 14 different 1st grade of middle school textbooks were analyzed Selected textbooks contained 55.6% of elementary school level grammar items, and only 37.3%(7.1% are not found in the Curriculum) of middle school level grammar items. Even though there is need to review for elementary school courses, 55.6% load is reviewed to be too much. In the National English Curriculum, there were 192 grammar items of middle school level. However, in the 1st grade of middle school textbook, average of only 9.3 items are found in the textbook. This means that students need to learn the remainder of 182 grammar items in 2nd and 3rd grade of middle school years. By the experiment of testing 1st grade middle school students, the score on the grammar items in the textbook were double scored than that are not in the textbook. This is why students should learn grammar by the textbook, which learners' knowledge of grammar showed in the textbook is significantly high. This study can be interpreted to conclude that improvements of grammar teachings in the National Curriculum of Korea and in the textbook of Korea are needed. Since textbook publishing for public school is depending on the government provided curriculum and the publishers of the textbooks, the government and the publisher should discuss the rational proportions of levels of grammar items to appear in the each grade of school textbook. That way, the learners are able to obtain grammar knowledge more easily and properly through textbooks, which plays a key role for learner's knowledge of grammar items.
