The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the juvenile parental attachment on adaptation to the school life and to verify the mediating effect of the emotional intelligence and the peer support in that process.
The following study questions were set according to the purpose of this study. First, what relationship there is among the parental attachment, school life adaptation, emotional intelligence, and peer support? Second, does the emotional intelligence have a mediating effect between the parental attachment and the school life adaptation? Third, does the peer support have a mediating effect between the parental attachment and the school life adaptation? This study was conducted targeting 297 male and female students in the 1st~2nd grade of high school in Gyeongsangnam-do. The school life adaptation criterion that Yoo Yoon Hee(1994) modified and complemented the school life adaptation questionnaire targeting children made by Lim Jeong Soon(1993) in accordance with the middle/high school students was used in order to examine the school life adaptation, and the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment-Revised(IPPA-R) that Ok Jeong(1998) adapted and modified Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment(IPPA) by Armsden and Greenberg(1987) was used to examine the parental attachment. The emotional intelligence test for adolescents made by Moon Yong Rin(1999) was used as a criterion for measuring the emotional intelligence, and 9 questions applicable to the friend support among the student society support criterion that Lee Mi Ra(2001) modified and complemented based on the study by Nolten(1994) were used to measure the peer support.
The result of this study is as follows. First, there is a significant correlation among the school life adaptation, parental attachment, emotional intelligence, and peer support. Second, the emotional intelligence has a partial mediating effect on the parental attachment and the school life adaptation. Third, the peer support has a partial mediating effect on the parental attachment and the school life adaptation. That is, it was confirmed when the juvenile parental attachment affected the school life adaptation, the emotional intelligence was high and if the youths felt the peer support more highly, the youths’ adaptability to school life was higher.
This study revealed the emotional intelligence and the peer support had a partial mediating effect in the relationship between the parental attachment and the school life adaptation, and as the effect of the emotional intelligence among them was a little higher than the effect of the peer support, it was possible to understand the route that the parental attachment influenced the school life adaptation through the emotional intelligence and the peer support. Through this, this study revealed a necessity for the education program aimed at the parents to raise the school life adaptation of adolescents having trouble in the school life adaptation, and this study is significant in having revealed the education and counseling approach that can help improve the emotional intelligence and can raise the peer support should be done. Since the emotional intelligence is influenced by the environment and it can develop as a result of experience in it, the school is an important place for adolescents to learn the emotional skill and competence. Hereupon, the school field should be able to help it through the educational activities or the systematic training program focusing on the development of the emotional intelligence, and as the peer support is also an important variable in the school life adaptation of adolescents, this study suggests that the education activity scene be provided for adolescents with the low peer support to get along with their peers, and various counseling approaches such as the program that can raise the peer support or the interpersonal skill improvement program are required.
