Eliminating the color filter-installation step during image sensor construction is important for shortening the light-path, increasing the flexibility of the lens design, further decreasing the overall size of the image sensor and improving the quantum efficiency of the fabricated devices. In order to realize high performance organic photodiodes (OPDs) without using color-filter, we optimized for standard photodiode structure first and then fabricated the color-selective photodiodes by using color-selective semiconducting materials. First of all, we analyzed the effect of hole- and elecron-blocking layers and the thickness of the active layer on the figure-of-merits of photodiodes such as dark current and specific detectivity. For photodiode fabrication, PBDTT-DPP, the commercial electron donor, was used as a p-type polymer for achieving both broadband absorption and a high absorption coefficient in conjunction with [6,6]-phenyl C70 butyric acid methyl ester (PC70BM) for constructing photoactive layers. Through systematic investigations of various interfacial layers, we found that the thickness of the active layer and the energy level of the hole/electron blocking layer were critical for minimizing the dark current of OPDs. Consequently, we realized a high detectivity of 5.3×10^12 Jones with an optimized device architecture. With these points in mind, we fabricated and analyzed the blue- and green-selective OPDs. For the fabrication of color-selective OPDs, we introduced the concept of the non-absorbing acceptor layer with which the absorption range of the donor layer can be fully reflected in the final photodiode performance. For efficient dark current suppression, moreover, a planar heterojunction (PHJ) is constructed in inverted photodiode geometry, leading to exceptionally low dark current without sacrificing high color selectivity. To minimize the transit time spread, the transit times of holes and electrons are systematically adjusted so that the resulting photodiodes have fast temporal responses. The optimized devices showed high detectivity values with a low noise current simultaneously. In addition, a high 3-dB bandwidth values over 10 kHz and a linear dynamic range (LDR) values over 100 dB are obtained. These works demonstrate the feasibility of achieving color filter-free photodetectors based on single-absorbing PHJ photodiodes.
