Previous studies on languages through network-theoretic analysis have reported that the phonological networks cross-linguistically show the characteristics of a small world network and that phonological forms exhibit assortative mixing by degree (degree being the number of phonological neighbors). As the extension of the previous studies, this thesis analyzes English and Korean phonological networks to provide additional evidence that the above-mentioned structure of the lexicon is observed across languages. Vitevitch (2008) and Arbesman et al. (2010), based on the Neighborhood Activation Model (Luce 1986), analyzed phonological networks of various languages as graphs, in which individual words were vertices and they were connected with edges if they were phonological neighbors. The two studies conducted network-theoretic analyses on these graphs and revealed cross-linguistic commonality in being small-world networks and showing assortative mixing by degree. However, the validity of the English data used in the previous studies is questioned and Korean has not been analyzed with this method yet. Therefore, this paper investigates whether the results of the network analysis presented in the previous studies can successfully be replicated with a new English data and Korean lexicon. More specifically, this thesis examines whether English and Korean phonological networks satisfy the two requirements for being a small-world network, namely (a) the average path length that approximates that of a random network and (b) the clustering coefficient significantly larger than the corresponding value of a random network; and whether phonological forms in the two languages show assortative mixing by degree, as is represented as a significantly positive Pearson’s correlation coefficient r. The results of the examination indicate that both lexicons are small-world networks, and that phonological forms in the languages show assortative mixing by degree. These two characteristics of the organization of the phonological network are meaningful, in that they account for the rapid and accurate language processing. For analysis, we utilized the programming language R (R Core Team 2016, R version 3.3.1) and the network analysis software Pajek (de Nooy et al. 2011). The actual procedure of using these two computer programs to derive the results is presented in Chapters 3 and 4, and in Appendices.
