The progressive development of the machine civilization has brought many changes to our life since 20th century and as various complex and variable viewpoints appeared throughout the industrial revolution, the art activity based on the machine technology development became activated. In order to help understand the kinetic art, the development process from the initial process to the present, use of kinetic art in the performance art, and the way to be used in the dance performance are examined. The kinetic art used the ‘object’ mostly pursuing the movement at the beginning, and now the meaning and technology of the kinetic art developed into the ‘virtual media kinetic’ using the advanced media. [Scattered Crowd], a work by William Forsythe, which featured the biological elements and [Une piece mecanique] by Geisha Fontaine and Pierre Cottreau, which showed the aesthetic elements by using the machine were analyzed. The virtual media kinetic art includes the laser art which produces and transforms the image by giving off the high-intensity ray or light, holography that can express the object as it is in three dimensions in terms of color and shape, and projection mapping giving the virtual illusion. [The Measures Taken] by Alexander Whitley Dance Company, which used the laser art, 「Phosphene Variations」 by Jason Akira Somma, which used the holography, and [Cry] by Choe Sangcheul Dance Company, which expressed the movement by means of the projection mapping technology were analyzed. The works were analyzed through the ‘imagification’ which could be defined as the figurative language as the expandability element of 3-performance use, and the ‘interaction’ showing the relationship among the ‘temporality/ spatiality’ changing specially by the outside stimulus, kinetic art, and dance. The purpose of this study is to analyze the kinetic art using the object of kinetic art having the common nature with dance and analyze the dance works using the kinetic art of the expanded concept. The dance can have trouble communicating with the audience due to many limitations in expressing and conveying the movement. However, this study is aimed to overcome the limit of the dance by using the kinetic art, a symbolic structure, and to give the active third dimension to the audience watching the dance performance through the use and fusion of the future kinetic art. Like this, it is impossible to predict the expandability on the development possibility of the dance performance due to the collaboration of the developed technology as the technology developed endlessly as the dance performance is combined with the technology from now on. This study is significant in the way that the fusion of the kinetic art and dance performance expressing the dynamic movement in common can create a great effect through the interaction, and the dance combined with the technology finds different expressive ways in future. It is analyzed through the works that the dance can be used in another way.
