In recent, together with industrial development and improving life style, needs for comfort and rapid transportation systems are increasing. Especially, high-speed transportation, such as aircraft and trains clinch more and more customers because of their reliability and safety. These high-speed transportation systems use rapid rotating shafts to transmit power. Since the rotating shaft in high speed transportation system is normally used under severe conditions of temperature and mechanical stress, the shaft design must be verified regarding its performance and lifetime requirements under various conditions through reliability test methods. A high-speed rotating (transmission) shaft, supported by bearings at its ends, usually has cylindrical shape and transmits power by rotational motion. During power transmission, both stress from bending and torsional moments act on the shaft. Under this multi-axial state of stress, the shaft could fail and cause fatal consequences to people nearby. To prevent shaft failure, it is necessary to assess the reliability of shaft design and verify it by testing. Among others, torsion and torsion fatigue life tests are normally selected to verify the reliability of power transmission shafts. In this thesis, different torsion test rig designs for reliability testing are presented. To evaluate these designs multiple power transmission shafts were tested on these rigs. The test specimens are PTO(Power Take-Off) shafts for aircrafts and tripod shafts for high-speed trains. To verify the plausibility of the testing done, a simulation has also been carried out for different conditions of stress and its results were compared to the test outcomes. From the tests and simulation results, conclusions are as follows; 1. A test rig with regulatable temperature and torque condition has been designed. Its usefulness was verified through static torsion test of titanium alloy PTO shafts under two temperature conditions of -54 ℃ and 153 ℃. This test rig is useful for shaft torsion tests under harsh environmental conditions. 2. A torsion test equipment was designed to apply torsional moments of up to 48 kNm and 2 Hz by using a hydraulic servo actuator. Its effectiveness was verified by torsion tests of large shafts. Therefore, this test apparatus will be useful for torsional fracture and fatigue test of large shafts. 3. A test apparatus and various auxiliary monitoring systems, capable of simultaneously applying torsional and bending moments at up to 22,000 rpm, were designed. This high-speed rotation test equipment with real-time monitoring technology is useful for testing of various high-speed rotating parts. 4. Since the PTO shaft, tested under increased torque of 1550 Nm, failed after 5.6×105 cycles, the shaft should be sufficient to last for 3.0×105 cycles at 508.5 Nm and therefore fulfill the “low cycle fatigue” requirement. Additionally, under high cyclic fatigue test conditions, the ball joint has a B10 life of 12.58 hours with a confidence level of 95 % based on the results of statistical analysis. 5. The shaft fuse having its diameter below 62 mm does not meet the design requirement of a fuse breaking torque of 43.5 kNm. Therefore, the fuse diameter of the shaft should be at least 63.5 mm. To satisfy the design requirement of 3×105 cycles, it is necessary to complement the post-processing, for example by shaft polishing and shot peening.
