The aim of the present study is to arrive at a hermeneutic understanding of narrative texts in literatherapy that serve as a therapeutic tool and show the therapeutic process and results thereof, and moreover to find an application model that follows from this hermeneutic understanding. The most important element that literatherapy and hermeneutics have in common is the text. It refers to discourse fixed by writing. Humans are beings that seek to express their actions and experiences in language, and language thus expressed is discourse. Paul Ricoeur held the view that discourse has its origin in humans’ efforts to convert their private experiences to public ones. Ultimately, therefore, discourse is a tool of communication to overcome loneliness. Thus, texts are human experiences of time and narratives accumulated in consciousness and unconsciousness, which are revealed in the form of written language. Text expressed in this way contains both revealed and concealed meaning, and thus it requires exegesis. In order to understand literatherapy in terms of textual hermeneutics, the first stage of this study examined the relationship between literatherapy and textual hermeneutics. First, it provided a hermeneutic investigation of symbol, metaphor and narrative, which may be viewed as key constituents of any text. On the basis of this theory of hermeneutic understanding, the present study looked at the texts written by participants in a clinical case of literatherapy, and presented exegeses of the parts of their writings that may be classified as symbolic, metaphoric or narrative. Next, in regard to textual exegesis, we follow the view of Ricoeur who offered exegeses of the significance of key symbols in literary works from both psychoanalytical and phenomenological standpoints. In regard to the psychoanalytical standpoint of textual exegesis, we explored Ricoeur’s exegetical perspective on the basis of Freud and Lacan’s theories, and in regard to the phenomenological standpoint, we explored Hegel’s theory together with Ricoeur’s exegetical perspective. Then we applied this approach in practice by analyzing the key symbols according to psychoanalytical and phenomenological exegeses in three literary works, namely Sophocles’s Oedipus Rex, Wilhelm Jensen’s Gradiva, and Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment. The second stage of the study offered a new hermeneutical application model for literatherapy. The application model looked at the three stages of mimesis in Ricoeur’s theory of mimesis in light of the Tetra System, which is a procedure employed in literatherapy. Namely, Mimesis I corresponds to the Initial Phase of literatherapy, Mimesis II to the Action Phase and the Integration Phase, and Mimesis III to the Reorientation Phase. We examined the applicability of this scheme by looking at the theoretical and practical aspects of each part of the scheme. This was followed by an examination of Ricoeur’s hermeneutic investigations that apply his theory of mimesis to literary works. In particular we looked at Ricoeur’s approach to Marcel Proust’s Remembrance of Things Past, and offered Ricoeur’s exegesis according to the three mimetic stages along with the threefold scheme of metaphor, recognition and impression regained as the hermeneutic application model for narrative texts in literatherapy. The third stage of the study was a comprehensive application of the theory discussed thus far to actual clinical cases of literatherapy. The cases are that of a middle-aged woman who suffered from trembling hands in front of other people, and that of an adolescent male student who complained of lethargy in learning and more generally in all aspects of his life. We applied the hermeneutic framework of exegesis according to the three stages of mimesis and the threefold exegetical scheme of metaphor, recognition, and impression regained to the two cases. Our exegesis was performed mainly on the texts written by the clients during the process of literatherapy, but pictorial illustrations were also provided to aid the visual understanding. In conclusion, it can be said that the difficult and complicated process of textual hermeneutics is by all means necessary in properly understanding clients and aiding their recovery during the therapeutic process. Here subjective factors like the therapist’s individual psychology and attitude toward life play a large role, but there is also a definite need for a concrete and objective hermeneutic framework. Literatherapy relies heavily on linguistic and writing tasks. In the process of therapy the client or the participant’s life story finds expression in the form of a text containing diverse metaphors, symbols, and narratives. Repeating or changing metaphors and symbols in the therapeutic setting lead the client and the therapist toward recognition and self-examination. Through this process the client is able to regain his or her original state, and is able to redirect his or her gaze from its exclusive focus on the past towards the present and the future. Thus the hermeneutic application model that we offer in this study can be used to clearly observe the changes that the clients or participants undergo during literatherapy in the texts that they write during the process.
