Increasing yield and nutritive value of corn-soybean mixed forage for livestock through using different herbicides :

Effect of different herbicides was investigated with aim to increase the growth, yield and nutritive value of corn-soybean mixed cropping forage under five treatments with three replicates. First treatment (control) had no herbicide, whereas 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th treatments had Alachlor, Simazine, Pendimethalin and Mixture (Alachlor +Simazine) herbicides, respectively. The 32P75 (Pioneer) seed was selected for corn, whereas crossbred (PI483463 X Hutcheson) seed was chosen for soybean in corn-soybean for mixed seeding. Sowing was performed on 10th June, 2015, whereas harvesting of mixed crop was carried out on 21st September, 2015. The data were analyzed through ANOVA technique using SAS 9.1.3 software. Findings depicted that soybean height was significantly lower under mixture of Alachlor & Simazine than Pendimethalin emulsion, whereas corn-soybean coupling is found higher (P0.05) with other treatments. Simazine alone or with Alachlor mixture increased (P<0.05) dry matter yield in corn than control but significantly decreased DM yield & survivability in soybean plants as compared to that of Pendimethalin treatment. Total TDN yield was markedly enhanced in both Simazine and Pendimethalin treatments. All herbicides were found effective against emergence of weeds as compared to control. Conclusively, Pendimethalin emulsion did not affect corn & soybean growth and enhanced yield of corn-soybean mixed forage, whereas Simazine had adverse effects on soybean growth & yield. The effect of Alachlor on weed control was lesser than that of pendimethalin. Further research on suitability of herbicides in corn-soybean mixed cropping is recommended to authenticate findings of present study.
