In this study, the highly stretchable conductive electrodes based on wrinkled elastomers were developed by applying the interpenetrating polymer network (IPN). The wrinkled substrate was obtained from the IPN between acrylic rubber (AR) and polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS). A sheet of AR was swollen in PDMS solution, so that PDMS can penetrate onto the surface of AR sheet through diffusion process during swelling. After drying of the sheet, the AR/PDMS substrate was pre-stretched uniaxially and then selectively cured the PDMS of AR/PDMS (PDMS network) substrate. Releasing of the pre-strained AR/PDMS substrate led to the formation of wrinkles on the surface. The IPN structure between the AR and the PDMS was confirmed by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), contact angle and tensile test. From the morphological observations using scanning electron microscope (SEM), it was founded that the wrinkles were initially formed at 35% pre-strain. The wavelength and the amplitude of wrinkles were affected by the extent of pre-strain, and the behavior of wrinkle development corresponds to the Neo-Hookean model. The wrinkled CNT/AR/PDMS electrodes were successfully fabricated by spraying carbon nanotube suspension (CNTs) on the pre-stretched AR/PDMS substrates. The wrinkle structure and the electrical property of electrodes were changed by the number of spraying of CNTs (thickness of CNT layer) and the pre-strain. The electrical conductivity increased with increasing the number of spraying of CNTs (thickness of CNT layer) and the pre-strain. The electrodes also showed the electrical stability under tensile, bending and folding deformations. Especially, the electrical conductivity of ~102 S/cm was maintained up to 140% tensile strain. For the long-term evaluation of electrode, the dynamic fatigue test was examined under the frequency of 1 Hz and the dynamic strain of 115%. The electrical conductivity of electrode was maintained even after the 100,000 cycles of dynamic strain. Lastly, a feasible applicability of the CNT/AR/PDMS electrode on human part, the stretchable light-emitting diode (LED) circuits and the melody generator circuits were reported. It showed good performance under tensile, bending and folding deformations. Thus, this wrinkled CNT/AR/PDMS electrode has great potential in stretchable electronics such as wearable electronic, flexible and stretchable display and smart skin.
