The present generation requires leaders and citizens who have the will, ability and courage to think in ecological terms, understand the interconnectedness of human beings and the ecosystem, and act accordingly. Ecoliteracy is not only a paramount goal of our society, but also an important factor in making informed decisions when we face an opportunity to make an ecological decision. In order to properly verify ecoliteracy, appropriate standards and /scales need to be defined. In terms of educational effect, there is an increasing call for assessment of whether ecoliteracy improves when an educational program is implemented. However, because measurement of ecoliteracy deals with invisible potential aspects, it requires not only a careful selection of variables but also an application of standardized, systematic and scientific procedures for developing scales. Most of the scales related to ecoliteracy that have been applied so far did not include definite basic theories or had no pertinent psychometric properties. Therefore, as a strategy to overcome the limitations of previous studies and maximize the reliability and validity as a scale to measure ecoliteracy, this study made use of the method of scale development, the Delphi method, and empirical verification studies. The purpose of the present study is to develop a scale to measure ecoliteracy of young children in Korea, and prove its validity and reliability. To achieve this goal, the concept of ecoliteracy was more specifically defined, a scale of ecoliteracy for young children optimized for the field of early childhood education in Korea was developed, and its validity and reliability were verified. In order to develop an ecoliteracy scale that can be applied to young children, this study set the following research problems: Research problem 1. What is ecoliteracy ? Research problem 2. What does the ecoliteracy scale for young children consist of? Research problem 3. What is the validity and reliability of the ecoliteracy scale for young children? In order to develop an ecoliteracy scale for young children, a systematic and scientific steps were devised based on the methodology for development of scale proposed by Devellis(2012). In order to conceptualize ecoliteracy, the concept of measurement was specified through the process of selecting constructs, their subcategories and details. In order to do so, literature review was conducted to analyze previous studies by making use of meta-analysis. Preliminary questions for the scale were drawn up through literature review, and the Delphi method was used to verify the CVR(content validity Ratio) and CV(coefficient of variation) in expert groups. A pilot test was carried out on young children, and the result was used to carry out a reliability test and an exploratory factor analysis. Finally, to examine the validity and reliability of the ecoliteracy scale for young children, a statistical analysis was made by making use of the data of the main survey. SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 22.0 programs were used to carry out exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis that consisted of research variables, including the mean of response values, standard deviation, frequency and percentage. In addition, analysis of internal consistency reliability was carried out on the questions that constitute research variables and analysis of the Pearson correlation was carried out on the research variables. Moreover, descriptive statistics of the research variables were proposed and normality was examined. Conceptualization of ecoliteracy helped to define ecoliteracy as an ability to understand the organizational principles of the ecosystem and to apply these principles to real life for the purpose of building a sustainable human community and society. Constructs of ecoliteracy drawn from this concept included affect, ecological knowledge, socio-political knowledge, knowledge of environmental issues, knowledge of cognitive skills and environmentally responsible behaviors(ERB). These constructs were included in the question items of scale. Based on the Theory of Ecological Attitude(Wiseman & Bogner, 2003), 8 subcategories of the ecoliteracy scale for young children were devised including preservation(rights of nature, intent of support, care with resources, ecological sensitivity, ecological social relationship) and utilization(eco-development, domination of nature, apathy towards eco-crisis). In other words, the constructs of ecoliteracy were applied to the question items of the scale based on the four-dimensional structure of ecological attitudes(Bogner & Wiseman, 1999). This structure diverts from the dichotomy that regards biocentric perspective and anthropocentric perspective as compatible characteristic groups on either side of the spectrum, but divides them into four parts instead. In the four-dimensional structure, ecoliteracy of young children was interpreted according to the level (ecoilliteracy, nominal ecoliteracy, functional/operational ecoliteracy, and highlyevolved ecoliteracy)(Cutter-Mackenzie & Smith, 2003). Additionally, based on the national-level curriculum (Nuri Curriculum), the ecoliteracy scale for young children was developed by including the contents of ESD(Education for Sustainable Development) demanded in the present time: social perspective(peace and safety, social justice, health and food, and globalization and international responsibility) and environmental perspective(natural resources, climate change, biodiversity, environmental problem, sustainable food production, sustainable village and city, prevention and reduction of natural disasters, and transportation). The number of the question items drawn at the first stage of developing the ecoliteracy scale for young children was 217. Overlapping items were modified and the number of items was reduced to 44 items; and then expanded to 80 items, subsequently followed by 61 items, 64 items, and 51 items. The final number of the question items was 50 with 5 reverse score questions items. The type and form of measurement followed 5-point Likert scale. The ecoliteracy scale for young children was applied to 1,249 young children of 4 to 5 years of age attending 73 institutions in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Chungcheong Province, Jeolla Province, Gyeongsang Province and Gangwon Province. The result shows that all question items met the statistical standards. The process of verifying construct validity of the tools by confirmatory factor analysis drew all of the 50 question items with the statistical standards and 8 primary factors/subcategories were extracted through exploratory factor analysis. The scale consisted of 6 items of ‘rights of nature’, 5 items of ‘intent of support’, 8 items of ‘care with resources’, 8 items of ‘ecological sensitivity’, 5 items of ‘ecological social relationship’, 6 items of ‘eco development’, 6 items of ‘domination of nature’, and 6 items of ‘apathy towards eco-crisis’. R² of the final tools was 77.0%, and reliability was Cronbach’s α .788. The concluding results of this study indicate that the scale to measure ecoliteracy of young children developed through this study is stable, reliable, and valid. It is expected that this will contribute to the future development of theories of young childhood education concerning ecoliteracy. It is also expected that this study will promote studies on application of the tools developed for young children, and will serve as a foundation for researches to develop and apply programs to cultivate ecoliteracy in young children. Finally, this study will be used as a tool to set educational standards to cultivate and support ecoliteracy of young children as well as a means to assess the effects of ecoliteracy education.
