The purpose of this study is to present research on the planning and design of smart fitnesswear that supports personal training, enhances exercise effects, and adds value to apparel merchandise planning. For this purpose, this study examined the present limitations of wearable technology and the requirements of smart clothing for fitness, in order to contribute to the improvement of exercise effects through in-depth interviews with professional trainers. In addition, a questionnaire survey was conducted for 224 regular consumers whose ages spanned from 20s to 50s. In order to analyze the acceptability of wearable products, the collected data was analyzed through frequency analysis, independent sample T-testing, one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA), least significant difference(LSD) and Sheffe post-hoc testing. The questionnaire data was analyzed in order to analyze the function demand for planning and design. The results of this study and the research of planning and design of smart fitness wear are as follows. First, qualitative research on the requirements of smart fitnesswear was conducted by professional trainers. Five categories were derived from the results of domain analysis of "improvement of exercise effect and strength". Thirteen cover terms were derived by a second semantic relationship analysis. The five categories, of "Shape", "Concentration area", "Kinetic angle", "Position", and "Kinetic velocity" were derived. It is necessary to sense muscle activity, motion angle or position in the category of “Shape”, “Concentration area”, and “Kinetic angle” requires the sensing of motion angle or position sensing. Sensing of acceleration and angular velocity are necessary for "Kinetic velocity". The "position" is defined by the relative distance and angles between the human wearer and the fitness equipment, and therefore, sensing methods for the position are excluded because of the present limitations of wearable technology. Second, a quantitative analysis was conducted to examine the acceptability of smart fitnesswear to general consumers. It was found that the acceptability of smart fitnesswear differed depending on characteristics related to exercise involvement and culture such as the place and purpose of exercise place, exercise purpose rather than on demographic characteristics such as age, sex, occupation, and etc. Third, professional trainers and general consumers were compared to determine the overall demand for smart training functionality. Both the professional trainers and the general consumers agreed that monitoring of “muscle activity”, “the angle of movement motion or the posture” and “calorie monitoring” were necessary for smart training functionality. On the other hand, regarding the heart rate, only professional trainers considered vital signal monitoring to be important to improve of the personal training effect. Other vital signals also showed differences in response background between the two groups. Professional trainers desired set exercise goals, increased concentration, and grasping the state of athletic ability, which is based on the results of heart rate sensing. Meanwhile, general consumers differed in wishing to utilize the results of biological signal sensing for continuing involvement, such as performing exercise accurately and safely and maintaining interest in exercise. Fourth, it is expected that ease of washing and the accuracy of vital signal data are important, based on other demands relating to smart fitnesswear. Finally, the planning and design direction of smart fitnesswear includes “muscle activity sensing”, “motion angle or position sensing function for each part required”, “concept and content development into Expert line and Ordinary line”, “Design in the form of Compression Wear”, and “differentiation of planning according to exercise place”.
