The purpose of this study was to examine how the audience would decode the movies polysemically and thereby, accommodate them. Specifically, this study reviewed audience's motives for seeing the movies, and thereupon, analyzed how they decode the themes and texts of the movies polysemically, and then, analyzed how much different their decoding characteristics were depending on their experiences and their status in the society. To this end, the movie 'Homecoming' was sampled, and thereby, audience's motives for seeing the movie and their decoding of it were analyzed. This movie handled the comfort women within the genre of the human dramas and thereby, induced the audience to consume 'the comfort women' affectively, and therefore, the uncomfortable subject matter 'comfort women' could appeal to the audience plebeianly. In addition, at the time when the movie was run first, the social issues relevant to the comfort women were on almost everyone's lips, creating an arena for a kind of audience' discourse. In this context, this study conducted an in-depth interview in an attempt to find the unique motives for seeing 'Homecoming' and examine the methods of interpreting the movie containing a social implication. Based on Uses and Gratifications Theory, this study analyzed audience's desires and motives, and based on Hall's, Morley's and Fiske's decoding theories, audience's polysemic decoding was analyzed. As a result, it was found that the motives for seeing 'Homecoming' were different from those for seeing other commercial movies, and that most of the audience decoded the movie dominantly, and that even if they criticized it, they thought its social implications were more important. Namely, their expectation of the social influence of the movie affected their method of decoding its theme, while their initial dominant decoding was followed by negotiated, oppositional and alternative ones in their order. Such findings imply that the audience decoded the movie polysemically based on its social implications and their own bond of sympathy.
