There is a growing number of cases in which artificial intelligence (AI) has been adopted by journalism. This study aims to examine how a reader perceives the credibility of a news article generated by AI under the assumption that AI will be able to perform a role similar to a journalist in the future. To achieve this, news articles on various topics were used to examine differences in readers’assessed credibility of the same news article according to whether they perceive the news article has been written by a journalist or generated by AI. . The present study is based on the Persuasion Knowledge Model (PKM), which states that a reader’s attitude towards an information provider is closely associated with the credibility the information(Friestad & Wright, 1994). According to this model, when a reader becomes aware of the persuasive intention of an information provider, the reader uses its own persuasion knowledge to interpret the information, responding to the persuasion of the information provider by selecting effective coping methods to achieve its own goals. Persuasion knowledge refers to the prior knowledge or beliefs of a reader regarding the experiences of the information provider (Kim Jeong Hyeon, 2009). In this light, the present study prepared news articles in three topic areas – politics, entertainment, and sports – and measured the assessed credibility of the articles when the audience had different perceptions of the author. The results indicate that when the article was about politics or sports, the readers rated it as more credible when it was perceived as an AI-generated article than when it was perceived as a human-written article, but the difference was not statistically significant. An entertainment article was rated as more credible when it was perceived as generated by AI than when it was perceived as written by a human journalist, and the difference was statistically significant. This implies that entertainment articles need to be given priority when applying AI technologies to journalism. This study’s contribution is important in the sense that it focused on news topics, which have not been covered by previous research, and the readers assessed the credibility of news articles that were perceived as either AI-generated or human-written, thereby providing clues as to the topics where AI-generated news articles may be more trusted and effective. The use of news articles from various topic areas holds theoretical implications for future research on the applicable scope and effectiveness of AI-generated and human-written articles.
