In East Asia, where aerosol concentrations are persistently high throughout the year, most satellite carbon dioxide (CO2) retrieval algorithms screen out many measurements during quality control to reduce retrieval errors due to the interference of aerosol signals to CO2’s. In order to improve the number of retrieval and accuracy by reducing the retrieval errors associated with aerosols, Yonsei University Carbon Retrieval (YCAR)-Cloud and Aerosol Imager (CAI) algorithm has been developed. YCAR-CAI algorithm retrieves column-averaged CO2 mole fraction (XCO2) from Thermal And Near-infrared Sensor for carbon Observation (TANSO)-Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) measurements onboard the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT), based on optimal estimation. To minimize the aerosol induced error, YCAR-CAI algorithm adopts CAI aerosol retrieval results as a priori information. The CAI aerosol algorithm provides aerosol type and optical depth information simultaneously for the same geometry and optical path as FTS. To evaluate the influence of CAI aerosol information on XCO2 retrieval, aerosol state vector is validated with AERONET measured AOD. All the retrieval algorithms show unrealistically small value of retrieved AOD, except for the current YCAR-CAI algorithm. These results support the improvement of YCAR-CAI algorithm due the minimized aerosol error with CAI AOD a priori. Error analysis indicates XCO2 retrieval uncertainty of 1.215 ppm over East Asia. The sampling error is also analyzed with Carbon Tracker-Asia data, which shows 0.32 to 0.36 ppm of spatio-temporal differences for each individual sounding due to the difference between TCCON site and GOSAT sounding position. The retrieved results show a evident annual cycle, with an increasing trend of 2.02 to 2.35 ppm/year in Asia for the period of 2009 – 2014, which is higher than that measured at Mauna Loa, Hawaii. These differences are likely induced by anthropogenic emission from East Asia. The retrieved XCO2 from YCAR-CAI algorithm were evaluated by validating with ground-based TCCON measurements and current operational GOSAT XCO2 retrievals. The validation with TCCON shows the regression line closer to the linear identity function compared with other algorithms with root mean square error of 2.25, a bias of -0.81 ppm. Even after post-screening, the YCAR-CAI algorithm provides a larger dataset of XCO2 compared with other retrieval algorithms by 21% to 67%, which could be substantially advantageous in validation and data analysis for the area of East Asia. This study suggests a different approach in the retrieval of XCO2, using simultaneous aerosol information retrieved from the same satellite platform, for future satellite missions.
