Jigokdo expressed in paintings of Ten Kings of Hell is a Buddhist painting containing the lesson of 'Encouraging Good and Punishing Evil.' An early example of Jigokdo is "Ochisaengsayunhoido" among India's Ajanta stone cave murals, and Buddhism is transmitted eastward through the countries to the west of China and to China, combining the Ten Kings of Hell faith with the Hell faith, appearing variously not only in the paintings but also in the sculpture. In the present works, it can be seen that the hell and the works increase in the later years, showing that the Ten Kings of Hell faith and the Hell faith were widely prevalent at the time. The time of the Ten Kings of Hell faith and the Hell faith introduced to Korea is not known exactly, but it is estimated to have flowed in to the Three Kingdom Period at the latest from the record of "Samgukyusa". After the united shilla, it was rampant through Jeomchal Buddhist Mass. In Goryeo era, with the Ten Kings of Hell faith based on the scriptures such as "Bulseolyeomrawangsugisajungyeoksusaengchilwangsaengjeongtogyeong (佛說閻羅王授記四衆逆修生七往生淨土經)" in 1246, the Hell faith spread widely, and Buddhism services (佛事) of Buddhist statues and paintings were conducted. Based on the Ten Kings of Hell faith and the pure land faith, the prevalence of "Yuxiu Shiwang Shengqi Jing (豫修十王生七經)" continued between Goryeo and early Joseon, and by producing Paintings of Ten Kings of Hell or Jiokdo, the meaning of Buddhist Memorial Service for the dead was emphasized. In possessed by an individual in the United States, which is believed to have been painted around the 13th and 14th centuries, the early Uiryeongsu (衣領樹) expression appearing in woodblock printed housed by Haeinsa was commonly turned out, which is said to be influenced by the "Yuxiu Shiwang Shengqi Jing" scripture prevalent at that time. The Ksitigarbha faith, which prevailed in the late Goryeo era, had a great effect on the view of the other world and death awareness. The paintings of Ten Kings of Hell, based on the world after death, have greatly influenced the thinking patterns of the afterlife, evoking the causal laws of self-reliance based on the results of the work. Among them is the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Bonwongyeong (地藏菩薩本願經), which mentions in detail the hell that contrasts with paradise. Based on the scriptures of "Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Bonwongyeong" and "Yuxiu Shiwang Shengqi Jing", the Ten Kings of Hell faith and Myeongbu faith were combined to develop the Hell faith, which brought about improvement of Cheondojae or Suryukjae retuals such as Ksitigarbha-jaeil, Yesujae, and 49je. In the Joseon era, the influence of "Yuxiu Shiwang Shengqi Jing" continued on the basis of the Ksitigarbha-Ten Kings of Hell faith, despite the implementation of the policy of oppressing Buddhist practices. In the "Parlgwanjaeshimyo (八關齋心要)", which was engraved in 1529 under the Ksitigarbha-sipjaeil of the Ksitigarbha faith, the Ten Kings of Hell and the hell punishment scene were expressed, and the "Seokssiwonryu (釋氏原流)" engraved in 1648 also described a punishment scene. These influences are seen not only in woodblock prints but also in Buddhist paintings made in the 15th and 16th centuries. For example, there are housed by Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst Köln, housed by Seontangsa Japan, housed by Boseongsa, Housed by Yuhyeonjae, and housed by Jieonwon, etc., in all of which the influence of "KsitigarbhaBodhisattvaBonwongyeong" and "Yuxiu Shiwang Shengqi Jing" is confirmed. Jigokdo in the late Joseon was produced more than before the 18th century. After the 18th century, western civilization rapidly flowed with the turmoil of political and socioeconomic situation both the inside and outside of Korea, and the change of the identity system occurred. As a result, Jigokdo has been produced a lot more than before. Although the expression of the hell represented in paintings of Ten Kings of Hell in each era varies, the iconography gradually becomes more formalized in the 18th century and faithfully succeeds it. Extant paintings of Ten Kings of Hell in late Joseon remain about 55 sets. The paintings of Ten Kings of Hell in Okcheonsa, and in Tongdosa, etc. as well as in Haeinsa produced in 1742 in the earliest of these were produced by the same version, and after that, the hell iconography were constantly followed in a fixed format. However, by the time of the transition to the 18th and 19th centuries, the hell scene is expressed in a complex pattern, away from certain rules or scenes. For example, in the paintings such as in Taegosa, in Bogwangsa, in Hwagyesa, in Bongguksa, etc., the iconography that shows the difference between the ages and the regions is emerged and the painters working in the area are frequently exchanged and reconstructed according to the capacity and originality of the individual painters based on the master copy shared with each other to be drawn with a different painting technique in part. It is also emerged in paintings such as in Shinreuksa, in Shinseoksa, in Cheongryongsa, in Songgwangsa, etc. that were produced in the early 20th century, and it can be said that iconographies of the previous period are drawn according to the same master copy. The previous studies on Jigokdo focused on comparing and analyzing the hell iconography divided into the early Joseon and the late Joseon. However, this study examined the development of the hell iconography from India to China, and compared and analyzed stylistic characteristics of the hell iconography expressed in the painting of Ten Kings of Hell in the late Joseon for the hell iconography of Ten Kings of Hell, which wasbrought to our country from China. Gamrodo and Jigokdo, which were produced at the same time as the scriptures of the hell iconography, and Jigokdo expressed in Taoism, were examined in relation to the hell scene of paintings of Ten Kings of Hell. Although Jigokdo shows iconographical differences between the ages and the region, it can be seen that Kitsigarbha Ten Kings of Hell faith was so prevalent and steadily produced at the time. In addition, there are master copies shared by painters working in each region. Based on them, the painter's originality was added, and the new iconography features were succeeded to modern times by producing different scenes from the present iconography. Since the united shilla era in which the penitent was emphasized, Goryeo era had the prevalent Ksitigarbha faith, and in the Joseon era, it was combined with the Ten Kings of Hell faith to show that the contemporary elementsof wishing for fortunes, penance and performance in the world were emphasized in Buddhism. In conclusion, the hell scenes expressed in the paintings of Ten Kings of Hell in the late Joseon have a character of wishing to go to heaven to escape the suffering of hell after death. In addition, it can be said that Jigokdo has been drawn to honor virtue based on the future life faith that originates from the Buddhist Memorial Service of the Dead and the Rebirth in Pure-land, in the desperation to escape from agonies such as war, natural disaster, and disease.
