This research study developed a creative education curriculum program that is necessary for musical play compositional activities and provided this program to 3rd grade elementary school students with the objective of examining the effects that musical play compositional activities had on the musical creativity of children including musical fluency, originality, syntax, and extensiveness. Various research literature required for musical play composition activities were examined in this research study and by analyzing the factors of the 3rd grade elementary school level music education curriculum, an education model for fostering creativity was developed and provided to the children. The musical play composition activity program implementing the education model developed to foster creativity was provided for a duration of 4 months from April of 2016 to July of 2016 to one 3rd grade private school elementary school class located in a private elementary school in the Gang-buk region of Seoul where the researcher of this research study worked. The MCTM-Ⅱ of Webster was used as an investigation tool to measure the musical creativity pre and post values of the children for analysis.
The education model developed to foster creativity was divided into 4 training stage lectures, which were lectures conducted on composing the music for the musical plays, and 16 additional lectures, which were the main lectures conducted on the musical composition activities to be engaged in, for a total of 20 lectures. The activities of creating rhythms with lyrics, creating improvisational melodies and creating short musical compositions were engaged in during the training stage lectures of the model, and the activities of making preparations, composing music, rehearsing the acting and singing, and performing and evaluating the performances were engaged in during the main 16 lectures. The results of implementing the music education model developed to foster creativity can be summarized as follows: First, it could be confirmed that musical play composition activities were effective for the entire student group including all genders and for the lower and upper level groups in terms of musical fluency, syntax, and extensiveness. Therefore it can be concluded that musical play composition activities have a positive effect on the creativity of students. Second, it could be confirmed that through the musical play composition activities, out of the 16 students from the total number of 25 students that originally could not read or compose musical scores, with the exception of one student, 15 students were able to learn to read or compose musical scores. Therefore it can be concluded that musical play composition activities have a positive effect on the ability of students to read or compose musical scores. Third, it could be confirmed that musical play composition activities increased the voluntary participation of students through a diverse range of activities, which are regarded to increase the desire for achievement of the students, and additionally by motivating the students to focus on the education curriculum, it is considered that there was a positive influence on the musical attitude of students through an improved sense of achievement, cooperation and self esteem. It can be concluded that this positive effect is effective for making students familiar with and habitually engage in musical activities. Therefore it could be confirmed through this research study that the musical play composition activities of 3rd grade elementary school students are effective for increasing not only the musical creativity of children including their musical originality, fluency, syntax, and extensiveness but also for increasing the understanding of musical concepts and for the ability of students to read or compose musical scores. It could also be confirmed that the musical play composition activities of 3rd grade elementary school students effectively increased the desire for achievement of the students and that these activities also had a positive effect on a strong sense of achievement, cooperation, improvements in self-esteem and the familiar and habitual engagement in musical activities of students.
