When an activity enjoyed(e.g. reading, walking) is measured, enjoyment, subjective well-being and willingness to engage in the activity itself decrease significantly(Jordan Etkin 2016). However, such responses may actually increase when there is an apparent reason or a goal in measuring an activity. In this research, we have conducted one pretest and two experiments to investigate the effects of self-determination and donation on perceived enjoyment, subjective well-being, willingness to engage and willingness to measure. Our pretest confirmed the findings of previous research. The first experiment investigated whether there was a difference in enjoyment, subjective well-being, willingness to engage and willingness to measure between measured and unmeasured activity when participants were preconditioned to have high self-determination. The second experiment investigated whether there was a difference in enjoyment, subjective well-being, willingness to engage and willingness to measure between measured and unmeasured activity when participants believed to be taking part in a donation. The findings revealed, when self-determination was preconditioned to be high and participants were manipulated to believe they are donating, enjoyment, subjective well-being, willingness to engage and willingness to measure which were low in measured activity (vs. unmeasured) appeared higher in measured than unmeasured. The difference between these activities was statistically significant. Hence the findings of the first experiment suggest that previous research may have been limited to participants with low self-determination and measurement can actually enhance enjoyment, subjective well-being, willingness to engage and willingness to measure when people have high self-determination. Moreover, the findings from the second experiment show that given the condition of participating in donations when measuring an activity, measurement can be continued while enhancing enjoyment and subjective well-being. Based on this research, both ‘self-determination’ and ‘donation’ enhance enjoyment, subjective well-being, willingness to engage and willingness to measure in measured activity(vs. unmeasured). In conclusion, our experiments show research implication that ‘the act of measuring an activity does not always have negative influence depending on the person and the situation.’
