He is important simply not because he was in the position of pioneer of abstract art, but because he achieved his own independent world of art by accepting exotic art and also blending the identify of his own country with it while working in the centers of world art of Tokyo, Pari, New York and the like as a leading artist Whose development of painting is equipped with a solid system in its consistency, persistence, and plastic logicality in Korean modern and contemporary art history.
In this paper, I want to know transformation process of painting and the plastic characteristics of his painting world throughout his life and to take a look at his an independent identity of arts.
I investigated his world of work from the day when he went to Nihon University in Tokyo studying there the begin his activities of work to the time when he passed away in New York with its division into the first period (seeking abstract art), the second one (pursuing one's korean identity) and the third one(unity with nature).
Tokyo period, he studied a number of the professors there were artists who had worked abroad and had become mesmerized by the new art movement in Europe.
He learned about the avant-grade art of the west from these progressive and liberal professors and developed a particular interest in cubism.
Pari period, works of Kim, whan-ki by focusing on traditional patterns expressed in Korean motif. Ceramics, Wooden vessel, ten symbol of longevity etc.
During his four years in Pari, he realized that he should first know himself, and that he should go back to his roots in order to go forward with a new and universal art.
Whan-ki confirmed the roots of his artistic spirit through refined formative language, meditative blue color, and various formative experiments.
In particular, whan-ki made continuous efforts to create in a new Design the 'eternity' obtained from Korean traditional materials and idea of naturalism.
In the period of New York, he came to manufacture works of all over stipple through the workings of dots, lines and faces based on the communion of nature.
As the effect of having investigated his world of work with its division by periods I could know that he cultivated other independent world of beauty than theirs by accepting the disposition of western art such as cubism and geometric abstract art, abstract expressionism, minimalism and so on and also expressing Korean or oriental lyricism of nature.
