The purpose of this study was to investigate the general tendency of academic factors, relationship factors, ego - resilience and life satisfaction and analyze the relative influence of academic and relationship factors on the ego - resilience and life satisfaction of children and adolescents (4th grade elementary school, 1st grade Junior high school and 1st grade high school students) in transition period.
For this purpose, data of 6319 students (2119 4th grade elementary school, 2092 1st grade Junior high school and 2108 1st grade high school students) from the Survey on Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey; KCYPS (2013) conducted by National Youth Policy Institute(NYPI) were used.
The panel data was analyzed by frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, independent t - test, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 18.0 program. The main results of this study are as follows.
First, children and adolescents showed a higher level of ego - resilience and life satisfaction as they were more satisfied with their academic performance, and with their parents, colleagues, and teachers. Ego - resilience was the highest in the first grade of junior high school and lowest in the first grade of high school, and the life satisfaction was lowered as the grade increased.
Second, according to the gender of children and adolescents in the transition period, 4th grade elementary school girls showed higher level of parent supervision, parental affection, peer relationship, teacher relationship, and ego - resilience than male students. In the first grade of junior high school, male students were more satisfied with academic satisfaction, parental affection, teacher relationship, ego - resilience, and life satisfaction than female students. In the first year of high school, male students were more satisfied with academic satisfaction, teacher relationship, ego - resilience, and life satisfaction than female students, and female students had higher level of parent supervision than boys.
Third, in the case of fourth grade of elementary school and first grade of junior high school, the influence on ego - resilience was in the order of friendship, parental affection, teacher relationship, and academic factor. However, in the case of the first year of high school students, the influence of friendship, teacher relationship, parental affection, and academic factors appeared.
the influence on the satisfaction of life appeared in the order of parent affection, peer relationship, academic factor, teacher relationship, parent supervision in 4th grade of elementary school and 1st grade of junior high school. However, in the first year of high school, parental affection, academic factors, peer relationship, and teacher relationship were the order. The implications of this study are as follows.
First, parents were the most important factor affecting ego - resilience and life satisfaction of children and adolescents. Parents need to interact with their children with affection and care, under clear and reasonable standards, in raising their children. To do this, we need to differentiate the parent education program according to the school level and customized parent education according to the development characteristics of the child.
Second, in order to enhance the ego - resilience and life satisfaction of children and adolescents, not only parent education but also peer and teacher influence are important. It is helpful to have a program that can develop peer conflict resolution skills so that they can adapt well to the school, away from grades and competitive learning, and to have intimate relationships with teachers and provide appropriate counseling and education.
Third, academic factors influenced ego - resilience and life satisfaction of children and adolescents at all school levels. This implies that children and adolescents in Korea have difficulties in psychological adaptation due to the burden of study since elementary school, or they may have complaints about life. This will help you to reduce the burden of your grades and to provide academic support programs and career counseling so that you can explore various career paths.
This study was able to grasp the psychological adjustment level of children and adolescents in Korea by looking at the ego - resilience and life satisfaction of children and adolescents who need to adapt to the new environment. The factors affecting ego - resilience and life satisfaction were found to be related to relational factors rather than academic factors. Therefore, it can contribute to healthy development for adaptation and happiness of children and adolescents in transition, and to contribute to effective intervention plan.
