Nowadays, reinforced concrete structure which the mankind depends on for living is going to be put to even tougher test. In order to improve the durability of reinforced concrete structure, environmental friendly and economic methods are needed. Among major measures to improve the chemical resistance of concrete, fly ash concrete technique is proved as an economical and efficient measure. Different from fly ash, furnace bottom ash, which is also the waste of thermal power plant, is of porous structure condensed by particles in different sizes. Therefore, it is difficult to be recycled for its high absorption rate and large amount of unburned carbon. Actually, furnace bottom ash is only recycled as sand substitute materials, lightweight aggregate, road and paving materials, etc., while most of it is buried in nearby coast. At present, the landfill of furnace bottom ash becomes the direct cause of many environmental problems. This paper discusses the feasibility of using furnace bottom ash as the additive for concrete and chemical resistance of cement mortar made of furnace bottom ash in different fines contents. As a result, with the increase of fines contents, the pozzolanic reaction becomes more active, and the comprehensive strength tends to increase. In the durability tests (sulfuric acid resistance test, sulphate resistance test and chlorine resistance test), the chemical resistance of cement mortar made of smashed furnace bottom ash was improved. It is demonstrated that the furnace bottom ash with specific surface area above 5,300㎠/g can improve the chemical resistance of cement mortar, so as to be an effective material for improving the durability of reinforced concrete structure.
