Working on vertical window, building wall, or vessel surface is quite dangerous, and wall climbing robots have been actively developed in recent years to replace or help human workers. Unlike ordinary ground mobile robots, a wall climbing robot needs to be designed considering gravity. Permanent magnets are used in this thesis to attach the robot onto a vertical surface against gravity force. Therefore, the robot designed in this thesis is possibly applied to a glass window because a magnet can be attached on the opposite side of the window, or iron vessel wall. Two wheels driven by DC motors are employed for the designed robot so that the robot can navigate on the vertical surface. The measurement of the robot path based on wheels’ motion is made by dead reckoning using optical encoders. Gravity can make the wall climbing robot slip, and this causes measurement error of the robot position in dead reckoning. In order to correct this error, we use ultrasound sensors to measure the surroundings of the robot. Inspired from insect’s feelers, an ultrasonic range sensor is oscillated between two specified directions. High sensing efficiency with low cost is achieved when the oscillating ultrasonic sensors are attached to the front and two sides of the robot. An experimental wall climbing robot developed can move in the speed about 200 mm/sec with the maximum sensing angle of 270˚ centering the moving direction of the robot and maximum sensing distance of 700 mm.
