Social Control and Its Ecological Impact in Huxley’s Brave New World

Department of English Language Graduate School Chonnam National University (Supervised by Professor Kang, Yong-Ki) (Abstract) The purpose of this thesis is to explore the various aspects of social control and its ecological impact in Brave New World by Aldous Huxley (1894-1963). It is rather intriguing that a number of scholars analyzed this work as a dystopian novel which criticizes science and material civilization. Recent studies, however, show strong tendencies to view this novel from different angles. Ecocriticism is especially noticeable among them and most of ecocritics discuss the influence of advanced science and technology on ecology. Therefore, it is an additional aim of this thesis that Huxley’s Brave New World is analyzed by applying social ecology theory so as to widen the horizon of criticism towards the work. Social ecology promoted by Murrary Bookchin claims that ‘domination of nature by humans’ is a phenomenon in a society which comes from ‘domination human by human’. Social ecology argues that it is essential that the social systems and institutions which create the social hierarchies be changed in order to build an ‘organic society’ which contains the most ideal and ecological ‘free nature’. Hence they search for the answers to the ecological crisis by investigating the society and its structure. The ‘Brave New World’ is a strictly organized and controlled class society. Humans are produced by cloning technology and socially controlled by advanced technology. According to the social ecology paradigm, this ‘world’ is the antithesis of ecological society displaying such severe social control methods as human cloning through bokanovsky’s process, conditioning by hypnopaedia and daily distribution of soma. Social control in this ‘world’ has resulted in separation of humans from nature and promoted the idea that humans are supposed to dominate and control nature. Huxley points out how domination and oppression by a few ‘world controllers’ and the Alpha class make society suffer. Brave New World also proves that the controllers’ greed for power and domination has created an anti-ecological tendency and in turn supports the claim that the key to overcome the environmental crisis is reforming society and institutions. Since it is the unequal social structure that is a serious source of ecological problems, improving the social structure will be the cornerstone of resolving those problems. In addition, improving the social structure resembles realising social justice. A society where inequalities have been removed, social oppression is absent and every person and creature on earth is recognised and accepted despite their differences is an organic society which also can be called ecotopia. When our major premise is considering the future of humanity, the significance of Huxley's ecological consciousness is greater than ever before. In this regard, Brave New World is one of the most famous works which richly contains Huxley’s ecological thoughts and offers a source of discussion for ecocritics. It is said that the novel offers a chance to look at the root of ecological problems and helps readers understand the ecological crisis that we face.
