This study aims to understand the spatial and temporal distribution of macrozoobenthic community in the subtidal zone of Geum River Estuary. A total of eight times of surveys were conducted from December 2014 to December 2015. Van Veen grab (surface 0.1m2) was used two times per station for macrozoobenthos sampling. The highest mean grain size and mud content was found at St. 1 (58.8%, 5.7?), decreasing toward offshore. The loss on ignition (LOI) also tended to decrease toward offshore as well. The degree of sorting showed a lower value in outer area. Monthly mud content and mean grain size were the highest in December 2014, and the degree of sorting was the highest in December 2015 and the LOI was highest in August 2015. A total of 229 macrozoobenthos species occurred during whole survey period, and the mean density was 906±747 ind./m2, and mean biomass was found to be 217.3±681.3 gWW/m2. Polychaetes were the most dominant with 93 species (60.6%). The number of species was the highest at station 4 with 72 species in October 2015, and the mean density was the highest at station 3 with 4155 ind./m2 in June 2015. And the mean biomass was the highest at station 6 with 4974.2 gWW/m2 in August 2015. The number of macrozoobenthos species was variable during the sampling seasons, showing the highest in August 2015 with 132 species and the lowest in Jun 2015 with 100 species. The mean density was the highest (1384±1436 ind./m2) in June 2015, and the mean biomass was the highest (635.0±1546.5 gWW/m2) in August 2015. Dominant species were Heteromastus filliformis (12.9%), Sinocorophium sinensis (10.2%), Potamocorbula amurensis (10.0%), Spiochaetopterus costarum (6.3%), Neanthes japonica (3.8%). H. filiformis occurred in every station, and S. sinensis, P. amurensis appeared in the station near estuary dam. And S. costarum has appeared in the station of outer area. Cluster analysis resulted that the study area was argely divided into three station groups of A, B, C. Station goup C was further subdivided into C1 and C2. The station group A is composed with stations near estuary dam where S. sinensis and P. amurensis were dominant. Station group B is composed with station 4 and the dominant specie was H. filiformis. Station group C1 is composed with station of outer area and the dominant specie was S. costarum. Station group C2 was composed with station 7, 9, which is the Northern Geya island, and the dominant specie was H. filiformis. The community distribution over time did not show any significant change. The sediment environment in the Geum River Estuary, seems to be deposited near the estuary dam, and it seems to enhance the silt and clay sedimentation near the estuary dam. H. filiformis and S. sinensis are known to be the organic-rich opportunistic species, and many of these species appeared near the estuary dam, showing organic enrichmentis being worsen in this area. S. costarum seems to be associated with the Saemangeum area by appearing as a dominant species even in both areas. The macrozoobenthic community in this study seems to be comparatively stable considering the change of community group is not visible over time.
