This paper has the objective of identifying the system of meaning and prosody of Kim, Sowol’s poems from the perspective that poetry is one form of utterance. In terms of poetry as a way of utterance, the poems have a subject and an object of the utterance, and are formed of the language spoken by them. Furthermore, in terms of a format, the poems have customary forms and devices that are distinguishable from conversational or prosaic utterances. This paper examines the context of how poetic meaning is constructed by conflicting compositions between the subject and the object, and the context of composing poetic prosody through the entanglement, struggle, and integration between the rules of individual language and stylistic devices. First, the compositional context of the poetic system and the process of forming text is examined preliminarily based on “someday in the future(먼후일)”. And based thereon, this paper further studies the compositional context of the meaning and prosody of all poems by Kim, Sowol . The poetic system of “someday in the future” is formatted into 4 stanzas; each stanza is composed of 2 lines and each line 10 syllables. And all of these correspond to the prosodic and syntactic rules of the individual language by introducing visual articulation, as well as the customary syllabic meter and format of introduction-development-turn-conclusion. ‘You(당신)’, the object of utterance is an existence that objectifies the subject’s inner orientation, and the pattern of utterance that corresponds to the psychological conflict between the object and the subject constructs a narration of romantic irony acting as a psychological defence mechanism toward the pain of ‘remembrance’ and the anxiety of ‘oblivion’ of the romantic yearn. The visual articulation of text reorganizes the utterance of 10 syllable units forming a constant rhythmic pattern into varied intonation cycles relevant to the division of meaning or the focused utterance occurring through the progress of the psychological conflict between the object and the subject. The important clue to identify the meaning of poems by Kim, Sowol is that ‘thee(님)’ respected by the subject of utterance is an ‘internal other’ as the object of romantic yearning. When the characteristics of the object of orientation that could be displayed as potential existence or actual absence according to the context of utterance are understood, it reveals the overall context of meaning of yearn and loss, impermanency and parting, exile and ‘never to return’, orientation and discouragement displayed in the poems by Kim, Sowol. The phase relation of the subject of utterance and the object of orientation in the poems by Kim, Sowol can be largely classified into three scopes. First, the adolescent subject feeling romantic yearn expresses his emotions by orienting the future location and object standing at a border zone, such as a waterside or a mountaintop. Second, the adult subject who has lost his yearning expresses his emotions by missing the past location and object when facing obstacles, such as water or mountains, saddened by the impermanency of life. Third, the exilic subject who has lost yearn and home altogether feels despair of his situation that he cannot return, by understanding his location and the distance to the object of orientation, or orienting a future object that reflects the characteristics of the past object. The poems by Kim, Sowol construct a narration of soliloquy through those different contexts, and an entirety is realized within the struggle between the continuation and discontinuation of mutual texts. The prosodic system of poems by Kim, Sowol is classified into three forms wherein the visual articulation literally formats the metric order, the visual articulation relieves or disassembles the metric order, and the visual articulation reorganizes or varies the metric order. The first form can be further classified into three sections: 1) while a syllabic meter having a set rhythmic pattern on each line is repeated, those rhythmic patterns are reorganized into varied intonation cycles based on the division of meaning and the focused utterance. 2) a free form composes the cycle of intonation and utterance based on the focus and divisions of utterance led by the rhetoric pattern and punctuation marks without a regular tonetic and syllabic pattern. 3) tonetic meter composes poetic prosody, harmonizing the lines by repeating, alternating and varying the regular rhythmic pattern. The second form is composed of a set of metric order, wherein fluidity occurs within syllabic and tonetic patterns of the lines, by the rules of the individual language and stylistic devices. The number of syllables of each prosodic unit gain fluidity based on the morphologic and syntactic conditions of utterance, and simultaneously, the line is non-formally divided based on the imagery unit, punctuation, and focused utterance. The third form is reorganized by dynamically spacing or categorizing the inner part of metric unit having a set of syllabic and tonetic pattern by the visual articulation relativizing metric order. The visual articulation actively organizes the poetic prosody based on the division of meaning and image, punctuation, rhetoric pattern, enjambement, focused utterance, flow of utterance or structural system by relativizing the function of literally formatting the metric order. The poems by Kim, Sowol constructs a system of meaning and prosody by entangling, struggling, and unifying the exotic and traditional, stylistic and linguistic elements of the poetic utterance based on focused utterance, subject’s situation, and morphologic & syntactic order.
