The present study aimed to identify effects of clinical art therapy on the mental health by improving anxiety, depressive mood, hostility and self-esteem in foster children. 20 participants had been registered in the national foster care center located in Gyeonggi-do, and they were divided into two groups, experimental group (10 participants) and control group (10 participants). One-on-one tutoring of clinical art therapy one hour per week for 11 weeks was applied to experimental group from December 2014 to April 2015. Symptom Checklist-90-Revision (SCL-90-R), Rosenberg self-esteem scale were applied as questionnaires. Salivary cortisol was checked in all participants. Kinetic House-Tree-Person (K-HTP), Kinetic Family Drawing (KFD) and Draw-A-Story (DAS) were checked at the begging and the end of the therapy program. SPSSⓇ software (SPSS 15.0, SPSS, Chicago, IL, US) was used for statistical analysis. Results of the present study were as followings: First, experimental group showed lower score in items of anxiety, depression and hostility in the SCL-90-R than control group, and showed higher score in self-esteem scale than control group, which indicated clinical art therapy played a positive effect on the mental health in foster children; Second, there was decrease in salivary cortisol after clinical art therapy in experimental group, however, no statistical difference was found in change of salivary cortisol compared with control group; Third, with regard to quality assessment by K-HTP, KFD and DAS, foster children showed improvement in their mental health after clinical art therapy program. Therefore, clinical art therapy program could exert a positive influence on decrease in anxiety, depression and hostility, and on enhancing self-esteem in foster children.
