Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a gas phase thin film deposition process, in which the reaction of each precursor and oxidant is separated by inert gas purging to cause a self-saturating reaction. From this principle, ALD can deposit dense, ultra-thin, conformal films on 3D-shaped surfaces with control of the films’ thickness and composition. With these benefits, ALD has received a lot of attention in the field of protective coatings. However, in order to use ALD as a protective film, it is important to modify the ALD process considering characteristics of each base material. In case of the polymer, the glass transition temperature exists and the ALD process should be performed at a lower temperature than the glass transition temperature. Also, the presence or absence of the functional group on the surface affects the quality of the ALD thin film. As the particle size of the nanoparticles used in the electrode catalyst of the energy device becomes smaller, the cohesion force between particles becomes stronger. Therefore, a new process must be considered in order to secure the durability of the catalyst without reducing the catalyst performance. In addition, since the degree of oxidation varies depending on the kind of the metal and the size of crystal grains are also different, the minimum thickness of the thin film to be secured for the protective coatings are different. In this thesis, the deposition conditions of ALD Al2O3 thin films applied to various substrates such as polycarbonate, carbon black, and silver were changed and the process conditions for forming an optimal protective film were investigated. In order to improve the durability against the chemical corrosion of polycarbonate, the effect of oxygen plasma pretreatment on the polycarbonate surface and the Al2O3 film deposited on the polycarbonate surface was evaluated. It has been found that surface activation is required to protect materials which have fewer functional groups on the surface with ALD films. Next, a vibration ALD reactor for nanoparticle coating was developed to prevent loss of fuel cell catalyst material due to carbon corrosion. The vibration ALD reactor was used to change the applied vibration frequency conditions and to establish optimal process conditions for deposition of conformal Al2O3 thin films while preventing aggregation of nanoparticles. Finally, ALD Al2O3 thin film was deposited and the optimal thickness was confirmed to protect the silver from corrosion caused by human sweat and to prevent allergies caused by contact between silver and human skin. Particularly, the thickness of the thin film which can prevent the diffusion of artificial sweat at the grain boundary of the silver having the polycrystallinity was confirmed. Therefore, it is expected that the basic understanding of ALD Al2O3 thin film process according to various substrate surface characteristics, obtained from this study, will be very helpful for various fields of ALD research.
