Water scarcity seems to be a disturbing prospect for humanity. Nowadays, in the diverse regions, the supplies for drinking water are inadequate and the needs are growing. Access to water is, basically, a multidimensional problem. Therefore, numbers of technical solutions have been made including the desalination of seawater. Desalination is becoming a predominant method for the production of drinking water. According to the International Desalination Association (IDA), more than 18,426 desalination units was installed worldwide, which today represent about 86.8 million m3 / day of water produced in 2015 and could reach over 120 million m3 / d in 2025. The Reverse Osmosis is the dominant desalination process. It represents slightly more than half 65% of global capacity. The record of environmental impacts of seawater desalination plants is extensive and in many aspects represented by the greenhouse gas emissions related to energy consumption in industrial processes, the visual impact of factories, noise and especially the evacuation of the brine or the residual water produced by the desalination, because most are installed on the coasts, the plants emit these residues into the sea. So it is necessary to recommend a program for new plants to a process of environmental impact assessment (EIA) in order to reach more sustainable project considering the environmental aspects. Algeria is among the countries of the world that are under the shortage threshold adopted by the World Bank. In order to face the shortage of water, Algeria authorities have chosen to be heavily involved in the desalination of seawater to supply drinking water. In addition to the 12 desalination plan existing, the Algerian authorities want to add another 33 station by 2019 and double the current daily capacity, which amounts to (2 200 000 million m3). The main goal of the research is to identify certain key environmental impacts of the desalination plant. In order to reach the objectives of this study, the environmental impact assessment of the desalination plant Chaat El Hillal, was analyzed, as a study case, to fully understand the different stages of desalination by paying particular attention to the process reverse osmosis and its impact on the coastal environment. Based on the analysis of the environmental impact assessment of the Chaat El Hillal seawater desalination plant, located on the Mediterranean coast of Algeria in the wilaya of Ain Témouchent, uses Reverse Osmosis process with a production capacity of (200,000 m3 / d). The key negative impacts are manageable.
