The objective of this study was to examine the effect of one-year old children's speech rhythm play at child-care centers on their basic life habits and playfulness. For this, study questions were established as follows: 1. 'What is the effect of speech rhythm play at child-care centers on the development of one-year old children's basic life habits?' 2. 'What is the effect of speech rhythm play at child-care centers on one-year old children's playfulness?' Study subjects were 20 one-year old children at S and J Child-care Centers in Seoul, and they were evenly distributed to an experiment group and a control group (experiment group, n=10; control group, n=10). Such demographic features as ages, residential conditions, life environment and parental socioeconomic levels of people in the area where S and J Child-care Centers were located were similar. Experiment was conducted in 16 sessions for 8 weeks (twice weekly) from October 18 to December 8, 2016. Children in the experiment group carried out a speech rhythm play to improve basic life habits and playfulness, whereas children in the control group carried out basic life habit classes of standard early childhood education curriculum by class teachers. In order to examine the effect of speech rhythm play at child-care centers on one-year old children's basic life habits and playfulness, this study used 'the Assessment Scale for Children's Basic Life Habits' developed by Lee, Eun Ha (1996) and modified/supplemented by Seo, Mi Gyeong (2004). And to measure young children's playfulness, this study used CPS (Children’s Playfulness Scale) developed by Barnett (1990) and modified/supplemented by Kim, Yeong Hee (1995). This study was conducted by the procedure of preliminary test, pre-test, experiment and post-test. And before and after the experiment, pre- and post-test were carried out on young children in both groups. Collected data were statistically processed using the SPSS 16.0 Win Program, and t-test was conducted to examine the difference of both groups. Study findings are as follows: First, as for the effect of speech rhythm play at child-care centers on the development of one-year old children's basic life habits, there was statistically significant difference in such all the sub-variables of basic life habits as manners, self-control, cleanness and orderliness between children in both groups. Second, as for the effect of speech rhythm play at child-care centers on the development of one-year old children's playfulness, there was statistically significant difference in such all the sub-variables of playfulness as expressions of joyfulness, cognitive spontaneity, physical spontaneity, sense of humor and social spontaneity between children in both groups. As above study findings show, speech rhythm play at child-care centers had positive effects on the improvement of one-year old children's basic life habits and playfulness. These findings seem to suggest the fact that if speech rhythm play is actively and daily utilized at child-care centers for one-year old children, it will effectively form young children's basic life habits and improve their playfulness. In this vein, the author hopes many early childhood teachers will more actively use speech rhythm play at child-care centers as a very effective educational approach, thus improving young children's basic life habits and playfulness which have been recently dealt with importantly by early childhood education for one-year old children.
