Abstract
A Study of the Multicultural Theology
The Korean society have already become a multi-cultural society with more that 2 million foreign migrants who actually live in Korea. This situation asked Korean churches to recognize missional needs for multi-cultural mission towards them, and many churches have been involved in improving the rights of the migrants and alien workers, the equality between men and women in multi-cultural households, including the education of their children. Additionally, Korean churches have kept discussing and developing diverse missional discourses to evangelize the migrants. The discourses, however, have been negligent of developing themselves into a theology in perspective of systematic theology, hovering around the discourses of practical strategies in perspectives of missiology. Hence, the purpose of this thesis is to present the systematic theological foundations and necessity of multi-cultural missions, considering the Korean situation where the number of migrants dramatically increase. In the thesis, firstly, describing the present state and characteristics of Korea multi-cultural society, terms related to multi-culture are theologically redefined to establish multi-cultural missions, and the Scriptural and theological meanings and grounds of multi-cultural missions are probed. Particularly, multi-cultural contents in both Old and New Testament are reviewed and analyzed in relation to Scriptural grounds of multi-cultural theology. Futhermore, the universality of the gospel, the doctrine of Paul's justification, and the multi-cultural characteristics and meanings of the Kingdom of God are also researched. In addition to this, as a practical example of multi-cultural missions, mission works in the city of Ansan where I, the writer of this theses, works as a pastor serving multi-cultural migrants, are introduced in relation to the essence of the church. The works are divided into the category; one is the work of Diakonia-koinonia, and the other one of Kerygma-didache. Scripture shows consistent interest in multi-cultural migrants, and the gospel that Scripture testifies is a multi-cultural gospel that has no discrimination between all human beings. In other words, the key value that Scripture reveals is the very universal value that every human is equal when it comes to the gospel, and the Kingdom of God indicates a community of one family where all human beings recognize one another as brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, regardless of their culture, tribal origin, or nationality. In this context, multi-cultural missions is not a excluded mission area done as a dispensational charity work, but the very essential mission of the movement of the Kingdom of God and should be understood and performed as a substantial mission that gospel reveals.
