People live in the relationships with others, since they are born, experience various emotions and gradually build up mature personality. In this process, they sometimes have conflicts with people and are in a difficult situation, so interpersonal relations become their main concern. Especially, during college years, students form interpersonal relations, breaking away from friendships in the class unit they had until high school days, meeting various people and spontaneously participating in activities in the club and department. Due to this change, college students appeal anxiety and difficulty in that they should subjectively form the interpersonal relations unlike in the past. Thus, this study investigated the effect of college students’ resilience on interpersonal problems and examined the mediating effect of fear of failure in order to understand college students who experience difficulties in interpersonal relations and help them solve their interpersonal problems. To verify this, questionnaires were conducted with freshmen and sophomores in universities in Seoul and Gyeonggi, and data were collected from 350 persons. Excluding 16 unreliable questionnaires with an scale item not responded or undependable response, 334 questionnaires were used in an analysis. For data analysis, using SPSS 22.0 program, descriptive statistics analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, three-step multiple regression analysis, and Sobel test were conducted, and the result is summarized as follow: First, it turned out that there were statistically significant correlations among the college students' resilience, fear of failure, and interpersonal problems. Resilience had strong negative correlations with fear of failure (r = -.50, p < .01) and interpersonal problems (r = -.60, p < .01). In addition, the fear of failure had a considerably strong positive correlation with interpersonal problems (r = .66, p < .01). Second, it turned out that the college students' resilience had a negatively significant effect on interpersonal problems (t = -13.69, p < .001). Of the sub factors of resilience, sociality had the biggest effect on all interpersonal problems, but control and positivity had significant effect on a part of problems. In addition, resilience had a negatively significant effect on the fear of failure (t = -10.57, p < .001). Of the sub-factors of resilience, positivity and sociality had significant effect on the fear of failure, but control did not have a significant effect on the fear of failure. Lastly, the college students’ fear of failure had positively significant effect on interpersonal problems (t = 15.82, p < .001). The fear of failure had significant effect on all interpersonal problems and especially had the highest explanatory power on nonassertive and socially avoidant problems above all. Third, it was found that the fear of failure had a partial mediating effect between college students' resilience and interpersonal problems (p < .001). To sum up, this study found that there are statistically significant correlations and relationships of influence among the college students' resilience, fear of failure, interpersonal problems and that the fear of failure has a partial mediating effect between resilience and interpersonal problems. These findings suggest a direction understanding of their interpersonal problems and how to approach therapeutically in the scenes of counseling and education in helping college students who are anxious since their interpersonal relations become broader and the ways of making relationships with others change, entering college. Resilience is the ability to adapt in adversities and a concept that collectively deals with the human’s positive ability, so it takes time to deal with it. This study suggest it would be necessary to take a measure for reducing the fear of failure rather than enhancing the level of resilience of those who complain of interpersonal problems directly.
