In this paper, Alan Dawson’s teaching methods were studied and analyzed : namely the hands-feet combination practice method involving rhythm patterns, and “Rudiment Ritual” were studied and analyzed to supplement the parts not addressed by these two teaching methods. Through the foregoing, a more holistic and complex approach to apply rudiments to given rhythm patterns was studied.
To that end, the rhythmic patterns that constitute the rhythmic phrases were disassembled and analyzed to establish a foundation for reconstruction of the elements of the basic units of rhythms. The “Four Rhythmic Prototypes” used in this paper were selected from among the rhythmic patterns that have all essential rhythmic elements in Ted Reed's textbook titled “Syncopation for the Modern Druumer”. These rhythmic patterns were set as rhythmic prototypes, which are basic examples of the integrated teaching method addressed in this paper, and these rhythmic prototypes were used as a base for research and applications for technical and musical expressions of rudiments.
In addition, the technical elements of the minimum units of rudiments were analyzed so that the rudiments can be applied to the rhythm prototype thereby preparing a base for application of the rudiments to any rhythm pattern. Furthermore, a practice methodology using a drum set was presented to prepare a base for a holistic approach to diverse musical techniques and sounds through diverse combinations of constituent musical instruments.
Based on a critical analysis of Alan Dawson's teaching method, the writer complemented Alan Dawson's teaching method to research into a more integrated and universal teaching method. Through this study, this writer expects learning effects such as technical training based on the understanding of the characteristics of various musical instruments, the acquisition of rhythm patterns based on the understanding of musical context, and physical training for the expression of diverse musical ideas.
