A study on the effects of damage recovery programs in protective facilities : focusing on female sexual violence victims with intellectual disabilities원문보기

This study analyzed healing and recovery by art therapy focusing on post traumatic psychological‧mental aftereffects which habitual sexual violence victims experience. The subjects of the study are female adults with intellectual disabilities in protective facilities and the study was carried out on 9 women currently in the Seoul facility(the maximum number of persons to be admitted to the facility : 9) among 3 protective facilities nationwide which accommodate female victims of habitual sexual violence with intellectual disabilities. The study aims to verify the effects on reducing aftereffects, recovering confidence, enhancing self-esteem and restoring reliable personal relationship by analyzing the effects on self-esteem and personal relationship of subjects and exploring repeated post traumatic emotional frustrations and aftereffects from past wounds, focusing on art therapy among damage recovery therapy programs. The study was conducted 15 times from July to September in 2015 with 1∼2 times(1 and 1/2 hours long a session) a week and again 15 times from September to December in 2016 with 1 time(1 and 1/2 hours long a session) a week in order to verify the influences and effects on psychological healing and recovery of art therapy for damage recovery, after collecting data about study subjects and assessing them. It also conducted evaluation on the status of participation and performance every session in order to understand what subjects go through and analyze their interactions, self-esteem and relationship improvement by exploring process of changes through each therapy session. The data was collected through 30 times of art therapy sessions in total and in-depth interviews and it was analyzed through the analysis method by grounded theory which is a qualitative research method. The form of the study was a closed form and it was adjusted depending on situations. As an evaluation tool of the study, a pre-projective test by K-HTP, HTP was used to evaluate self-esteem, personal relationship and emotional stability of subjects by considering their situations in the beginning and a post test was also conducted in order to verify the effects of the art therapy program on the day the program was completed. Pre and post tests of self-efficacy were also carried out. The art therapy program was conducted by dividing subjects into beginning, middle and post(completion) stages by the evaluation tool of the study. The findings of this study are summarized as follows. First, The study found that the subjects felt a sense of achievement by expressing their inner emotions through art therapy program in the protective facility and that the program influenced personal relationship in the small society of the protective facility by enabling the subjects to develop positive self-esteem from negative identity and to form a bond of sympathy with each other. Sexual violences leave much more serious psychological damages than physical ones and therefore, women with class 2 or 3 intellectual disabilities who suffer from post traumatic stress such as chronic depression, anxiety, fear and personality disorder found difficulties with developing personal relationship due to low level of sociality. It confirmed that the art therapy program had effects on improving personal relationship and self-esteem. Moreover, it turned out that the program also had effects on recovering from shame. Second, the effect of the art therapy program in the protective facility showed differences depending on the level of intellectual disabilities of female sexual violence victims. Women with class 3 intellectual disability showed evasive behaviors rather than behaviors of emotional recognition in respect of emotional behaviors and destructive self-expression rather than emotional self-expression in respect of self-expression of identity. Third, the art therapy program in the protective facility turned out to have meaningful correlation with social adjustment. These results show that art therapy can provide a positive support and improve personal relationship of study subjects with low self-esteem, negative emotions and difficulties with building proper social relationship due to damages from sexual violence and low cognitive function and therefore, it is sufficiently playing a role to complement psychological therapy. The study found that art therapy was effective in improving self-esteem and personal relationship and reducing anxiety for women with intellectual disabilities who experienced sexual violences and also verified that it ultimately produced changes in emotional behavior. The therapy also delivered positive effects by presenting methods to express the meaning of ‘self’ and improve relationship through forming sympathy and provided the subjects with a chance to enhance social adjustment. As shown above, the study is meaningful in that it verified that art therapy was effective in healing and recovery of female sexual violence victims with intellectual disabilities, and also had positive effects on improving self-esteem and personal relationship.
