This study was conducted to examine in depth what elementary school teachers experience in a teachers’ learning community in the form of same-grade-teachers’ regular meetings and what encourage them to participate in the teachers’ learning community. In this sense, the following research questions were selected:
First, what do elementary school teachers experience in same-grade-teachers’ regular meetings? Second, what factors make the same-grade-teachers’ regular meetings a teachers’ learning community?
Qualitative data was collected in fifth-grade teachers' regular meetings in H Elementary School. In order to understand the teachers' experience of participating in the meetings and to examine factors that make the same-grade-teachers’ regular meetings a teachers’ learning community, nonparticipating observations by voice recording, in-depth interviews, reports of meeting and questionnaires were used. The data was then analyzed by Colaizzi’s method (1978). The results demonstrated that the teachers’s discussions in the meetings were mainly about how to teach well and how to manage their classes effectively. It was found that during the meetings, elementary school teachers put a lot of efforts in reorganizing curriculum and seeking for better teaching methods and teaching materials. Also, they shared their educational philosophy and effective strategies to manage their classes. It was also found that the fifth-grade teachers’ regular meetings were more like a teachers’ learning community. The fifth-grade teachers recognized that their same-grade-teachers’ regular meetings were somewhat different from what they had experienced before. They also felt it was new for them to have a common vision within the fifth-grade teachers, which they called ‘You and I, together’. They felt it was a new experience to work together for teaching methods or teaching contents, to share their experience of teaching, and to share problem-solving strategies. It was found that the teachers felt themselves having better insights for the curriculum, better instruction skills, better relationships with parents, etc. Furthermore, it was found that these experiences gave them great joy and confidence in teaching and reinforced their identity as a teacher. Besides, the teachers reported that their philosophy in educating children had been changed in positive ways. There were several factors that made the same-grade-teachers’ regular meetings a teachers’ learning community. Among the factors, the most important was their will. The rest of the factors were support from the principal, support from the head teacher, teachers' leadership, and innovative school culture. The principal’s support was important; the principal was not demanding about any meaningless assembly, thus giving more time for the teachers to study in their group. Also, the head teacher played an important role in leading her colleagues and bringing about their voluntary collaboration. The teachers reported that the head teacher had been a role model to them. The head teacher's emotional leadership was found to be effective in the teachers’ learning community in that it banded the teachers together regardless of their different ages and career experiences. The teachers’ regular meetings had been often mistakenly thought to be routine works to discuss their school lives. However, the meetings in this study were found to be opportunities to learn, practice, and introspect for the fifth-grade teachers. It was found that the meetings were great chances for professional development. The results of the study clearly showed that the fifth-grade teachers' meetings had been full of learning experiences for the teachers. Therefore, it can be concluded that the same-grade-teachers' regular meetings can be a possible substitute for a teachers' learning community for their improvement.
