Study of Translationese as Seen in the Korean Translation of The Great Gatsby
Nanhee Gong Division of Interpretation and Translation Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation SunMoon University
Translating an English text into Korean is difficult because Korean has a different cultural background and language structure from English. That is why Korean readers sometimes find unnatural expressions when they read a translation. The unnatural expressions that show characteristics of the original text are called 'translationese'. The purpose of this study is to analyze the Korean translation of the book, The Great Gatsby. The first chapter introduces the purpose and scope of this study. The second chapter indicates theoretical backgrounds of this study. The third chapter deals with the types of translationese in the Korean translation. There are mainly ten types of translationese in the translation; inanimate subjects, subjects, personal pronouns, the passive form, verbs, conjunctions, prepositions, tenses, punctuation marks, and quotations. According to the types, translationese in the translation, the original sentences, and the suggestions are presented. The forth chapter is about the conclusion of this study. The translationese in the translation is mainly caused by a literal translation of the text. This might attract some Korean readers who want to relish the original. However, this prevents others from reading the translation easily. Therefore, translators should study more and be cautious about translationese in order to improve the quality of the translation. This allows readers to appreciate the beauty of the original novel and read the translation easily. .
