Escaping from the age of physical and technical power-based material competition, in modern society, human knowledge and value and power of human nature, such as creativity and sensitivity are receiving attention, and fashion is the same. Especially, with the increasing interest in diverse relationship structures like relationships between people, relationships between nations, and relationships between nations and individuals, platforms for embracing these are actively developed and used. The provision of services and platforms for these relationships has led to emergence of a new term, SNS(Social Network Services), which is inextricable any more from human life in modern society. The fashion industry is seeking a variety of strategies about marketing, technical development and management, using these relationship structures. Fashion is an expression mode of lifestyle mirroring the phases of the times, including clothes, and is a fruit of society and culture that humans belong to. In the 21st century, fashion is influencing the whole society, including technologies, politics, economy and art and its importance is getting bigger and bigger, while it was founded on part of culture of industries in the past. Fashion show collections of fashion designers to examine the trends of modern fashion and to guess at the way forward for the future mirror not only cultural and artistic aspects but the whole society. In particular, it is considered that using concepts, fruits of designers’ ideas and inspirations, it is possible to macroscopically analyze connection structures of modern fashion, from a microscopic perspective. This study examined design concepts of modern fashion designers through social network analysis. To meet incessant desires of consumers and to survive constantly changing environments in modern society, modern fashion is creating a new value in collaboration with different fields rather than setting limits to culture and art. The purpose of this study is to investigate the developmental trends of modern fashion, based on design concepts of fashion designers, and to demonstrate that fashion designers leave not only their personal views but message about society, politics, economy, culture, art, nature, environment and so on by directing and showing their collections. For a microscopic and macroscopic analysis and a diachronic discussion on design concepts of modern fashion designers through social network analysis, the theories of the existing social network analyses and the previous studies were reviewed and types of social networks were defined. Then types of social networks and key words expressed in the design concepts of the collections in the four cities; New York, Paris, London, and Milan for twenty seasons and for nearly a decade were researched and the implicit meanings were interpreted. The study findings are as follows. First, the density in social network structures of modern fashion design concepts during the past ten years was 0.02 to 0.06%, and degree centrality was mostly 10 to 20%. The 2009 F/W season showed a much higher degree centrality than other seasons and it was found that designers were influence by ‘financial crisis’, a social and financial factor. The fully connected type occupied the majority of the types of networks, and it was followed by the partially connected type and the radial type. Overall, the factors influencing the concepts of designers interacted with one another. Second, key words of individual seasons were extracted and analyzed, based on degree centrality, which puts emphasis on absolute connectivity index of social networks and eigenvector centrality for measuring influences of key words. Key words of individual seasons are ‘Women’ for the 2007 S/S season, ‘Mood’ and ‘Style’ for the 2007 F/W season, ‘Theatre’ for the 2008 S/S season, ‘Travel’ for the 2008 F/W season, ‘Designer’ for the 2009 S/S season, ‘Black’ for the 2009 F/W season, ‘Women’ for the 2010 S/S season, ‘Women’ for the 2010 F/W season, ‘Nature’ for the 2011 S/S season, ‘Movie’ for the 2011 F/W season, ‘Women’ for the 2012 S/S season, ‘Nature’ for the 2012 F/W season, ‘Architecture’ for the 2013 S/S season, ‘Women for the 2013 F/W season, ’Vacation’ for the 2014 S/S season, ‘Society’ and ‘Politics’ for the 2014 F/W season, ‘Japan’ for the 2015 S/S season, ‘Furniture’ for the 2015 F/W season, ‘Movie’, ‘Music’, and ‘Japan’ for the 2016 S/S season, and ‘Egypt’ for the 2016 F/W season. This shows that ‘Women’ was an important key word, which exerted the biggest influence on many seasons. Third, the ‘Women’ key word from 2007 to 2016 is subdivided into key words expressing society, culture, and art mainly. Especially, the key words expressing culture and art-related issues, or cultural characteristics of each art and each country were remarkable. Socially, there were key words expressing status and jobs, or events and groups, and in some cases, social issue like ‘homosexuality’ influenced the concepts. Particularly, the ‘Black’ key word displayed that economic environments influenced the concepts of season designers from the beginning of financial crisis in 2008 to the end of it. It was notable that the concepts inspired by social images of women, such as a laborer and a career woman were used frequently. Fourth, in a social respect, female image concepts were dominant from the 2009 F/W season to the 2010 F/W season due to the Great Depression. Generally, the concepts with social meanings appeared when there were issues influencing all over the world, or events caused by sexual, racial and religious conflicts. In a cultural respect, starting the 2007 S/S season, female image concepts began to emerge along with travel-related key words. It came to a state of lull from 2009 to 2012 and after 2013, it was actively adopted along with cultural key words like ‘Party’. Most of concepts and designs expressed female images in travel destinations, or in leisure culture and social culture. Artistically, female image concepts were always dominant and in the 2008 and 2009 season with an economic slump, the genre of music and art had a big effect on concepts. Many concepts were affected by movie, music, musical, ballet, and painting and mostly, designs and concepts borrowed character images, or were inspired by movements and clothes. Fifth, the concepts expressing confidence as women and activities as modern women lasted from 2007 to 2016. Occupational key words, social issues, and social phenomena were expressed as social elements. Culturally, the concepts of countries, or specific places and female images in leisure culture were set. Artistically, the concepts were influenced by the art genre, or active characters and feelings of art works. It was revealed that the social, cultural and artistic tendencies kept mixed during the 2007 S/S season to the 2016 F/W season. A remarkable thing is that in the 2007 season, cultural reinterpretations of destinations, or the concepts of airports to stop over for a travel were frequent. But over time, female images to enjoy leisure in destinations and innocent female images began to be expressed. Sixth, it was observed that although indirect ways, such as reinterpretation, or borrowing part of design elements were used at the early stage, direct ways were used in designs gradually. From the 2006 S/S season, designers started to deliver message using the existing colors, or create circuitous designs by reinterpreting costumes representing various occupations. Starting the 2013 F/W season, direct designs, which borrowed embroideries of specific organizations, or contained phrases emerged. This implies that direct expression of message intended by designers may increase more for the present. In conclusion, the result of social network analysis showed that fashion designers’ concepts have been developed with an attempt of continued collaboration with diverse fields, in addition to personal inspirations. For designing clothes and planning collections, fashion designers have reinterpreted and remixed experience in diverse fields and produced unique designs. This study has a limitation in semantic interpretation, since this study failed to comprehensively consider various types of networks for individual seasons, only focusing on centrality. It is thought that further research would need to perceive this limitation and to carry out more qualitative social network analysis.
