The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate droplet evaporation and heat transfer characteristics on anodized surfaces. Polished aluminum specimens and oxalic acid are used to fabricate anodized surfaces with various hole diameters and area fractions for droplet evaporation experiments. Unlike the bare substrate, the anodized surface shows an increasing tendency of the contact area due to the high capillary force inside the hole, causing to decrease contact angle. The evaporation rate of the droplet considerably increases at the anodized surface where the wettability increases. Also, the smaller the hole diameter, the greater the evaporation rate. Most especially, on the anodized surface, the contact angle decreases linearly, unlike the aluminum surfaces, and the contact area increases significantly during evaporation. Also, the depinning time increases at the liquid interface over time, maintaining a high contact area for a long time. As a result, heat transfer increases significantly. Also, the anodized surfaces significantly increase the mass transfer rate locally and exhibit a substantial heat transfer enhancement at the interface. Heat transfer enhancement further reduces the temperature of the solid surface. In this study, the liquid displacement length, apparent contact angle of the droplet and the evaporation rate are modeled on the anodized surfaces using the correlation within the error range of about 6%.
