The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of local aggregation phenomenon and intermediate layer for the nanofluid droplet during evaporation on the solid surface. For the nanofluid droplet evaporation, the behavior of nanoparticles inside the droplet plays a key role. The most previous studies regarding the nanofluid droplet evaporation treated that the nanoparticles have a homogenous distribution inside the droplet, and also considered the bulk state effective thermal conductivity of nanofluid. In the case where nanoparticle distributions are not uniform, aggregation phenomenon locally occurs, and the contact areas between nanoparticles and base fluids may decrease. Consequently, the effective thermal conductivity can be changed at different vertical and horizontal locations. According to variation of effective thermal conductivity, the corresponding characteristics of nanofluid droplets must be studied differently. Next, it is well known that the evaporation rate becomes a maximum at the contact line of the droplet. However, the criterion of contact line is still confused because it can be varied depending on the optical resolution. Generally, the apparent contact angle is measured from macro-scaled meniscus of a droplet by using the conventional optical microscope system. In the recent literatures, however, it has been reported that there exists such a nano-/micro-scaled thin layer which is called the intermediate layer. There is still lack of information and experimental data for the existence of intermediate layer near the droplet contact region. It has been thought that this intermediate layer plays an important role in the droplet evaporation. Thus, the present work deals with a challenging issue on the experimental visualization of the intermediate layer because the conventional optical approach cannot visualize this layer due to the resolution limitation. Moreover, the measurement technique for this intermediate layer is not established yet. This thesis consists of several parts as follows: first, this study examines the spatial non-uniformity of the nanoparticles inside the droplet caused by the local aggregation effect by using the inverted microscope system. The results showed that the effective thermal conductivity should be changed according to the non-uniform distribution of nanoparticles inside a droplet on the surface. Second, the present study visualizes the intermediate layer by using the confocal microscope system in order to overcome the limitation of current optical microscope system. Then, the layer thickness varying with time was measured during evaporation. The fringe pattern analysis was used for estimating the layer thickness. From the results, the rate of change in the intermediate layer thickness increases as the nanoparticle concentration increases. It is speculated that the case of relatively high volume fraction of nanofluid droplet generates bigger nanoparticle bank near the contact region, then the liquid layer covered on nanoparticle bank could be maintain until the droplet dried out. Moreover, the single nanoparticle-sized layer was observed outside of the contact region in the intermediate layer by using AFM and EDX analysis. This represents the existence of the intermediate layer. In addition, the present thesis studied the influence of nanoparticle concentration on the heat transfer and wettability change by measuring the dynamic contact angle, the perimeter, and the total evaporation time. The edge shrinking velocity was estimated for understanding the different patterns of particle deposition. It is also found that the total evaporation time and initial equilibrium contact angles decreases with the increase in nanofluid volume fraction while the initial perimeters increases ranging from 0.01 % to 0.5%. It is believed that the results provided in this thesis would be useful in physically understanding the evaporation mechanism for the nanofluid droplet in more detail.
