The main purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of young children’s communication in their social interaction with peers in free play in a child care center. Young children’s communication with peers in their social interaction with peers contains their experience on the world, intention and purpose for play and activities, and reflects themselves in their communication in their social interaction with peers. Because of young children’s communication with peers containing their experiences and intention, young children’s communication plays a key role in young children’s social interaction with peers. However, the studies on young children’s communication with peers done so far in the field of early childhood education have been concentrated on young children’s communicative competency and communicative strategy and thus analysis of the factors affecting communication with peers such as young children’s communicative competency based on the relationship between parents and children. These studies make us understanding young children’s strategy and competency of communication with peers in play and activities and thus make it possible to form the program enhancing their competency of communication with others. However, it is hard to know young children’s intention, experience, mind, and purpose of communication in their social interaction with peers, with not understanding how those is reflected in their communication in social interaction with peers. Because of this, this study tries to examine and understand in hermeneutic basis young children’s intention, purpose, and experience in their communication with peers and to help early childhood teachers to interact with young children in their social activities in the classroom. This study sets up a research question, that is, what is the meaning of communication in occurring young children’s social interaction with peers in free play activity. 15 three and four year old children in the mixed-age classroom were observed in their classroom and outdoor playground in the Yipeon child care center at the U city in Gyeonggi-do. The children had been observed in the child care center twice a week for six months during March through September in 2016. This study finds out several meanings of communication in young children’s social interaction with peers such as communication on hierarchy and showing something off in their play with peers, communication with recommendation and suggestion for play and idea for play toward peers. Specifically young children in this study showed off their idea on age, first position in the game with peers, gender difference, and physical strength in their play and activities in the classroom. In addition, the children in this study showed communication of aiming for the community with peers in the same purpose and category in play and revealed communication of conflict with peers in the games and play, with the rule focusing communication in play with peers. And young children in this study made communication with improvisational idea and thought for play and sociodramatic play with peers, which made play theme and topic changed with meta-communication with peers in a sociodramatic play based on the pendulum theory. Young children in this study also showed communication with socialization of teaching peers and giving useful information to peers and communication with sharing affection with peers in play. The communication young children have shown in this study means sharing the information, idea, knowledge on the world, and affection with peers in play and is the meaning of the system for understanding peers’ experience and process of activity. In addition, the communication found in this study is the meaning of imitation of adult culture, emergent function toward new experience based on the old one, and imitation of social skills and playing a role in play and activity. Based on these meanings of the communication found in this study, young children try to form their own culture with peers. The findings and the meanings of communication in this study imply that young children’s communication is a social device for exchanging idea, thought and experience with peers in play. And young children’s communication occurred in social interaction with peers implies a system for enhancing young children’s development and early childhood teachers need to understand the meanings of young children’s communication with peers in play and activity. In addition, this study implies that early childhood teachers allow young children to have communication with peers in their free will at any time and try to understand their communication with peers for education in the early childhood education.
