Since the 2000s, Korea has undergone a radical change of social structure and politics and with low birth and aging, the elderly population has increased, presenting various problems of senior citizens. Visual contents that reflect on realities began to deal with the problems of senior citizens as main topics and themes. Now people recognize the problems of senior citizens which have been neglected so far, and visual contents seem to re-create unstable looks of life in old ages which are spread in our daily life. This study tried to pay attention to the change of senior citizens who traditionally belonged to a neglected class in visual contents. Most of senior citizens in visual contents are re-created negatively such as for secondary themes, romanticized and caricatured, and senior citizens in Korea are still the subjects of neglect and perceived negatively. In this study, the author presented a new conception of senior citizens that is appropriate for present Korean society in order to change people's perception of senior citizens, and focused on gerontophobia, ageism and age discrimination which are main causes of generation discord and relate to the very sociological conception of senior citizens. In addition, this study examined 'senior citizens’ sexuality' and 'death' in aging society. In the future, society aging seems to progress more quickly. However, korean society in general has not prepared for aging properly for the present and therefore cannot but go through various social problems, thus inevitably reflecting severe problems of senior citizens onto visual contents. In this study, the re-creation of senior citizens was examined through TV programs, dramas, entertainment shows and advertisements since the 2000s when senior citizens started to play some leading roles. In addition, via analyzing domestic movies of various genres of which theme is senior citizens after the 2000s, the negative perspective to senior citizen’s image, life and death presented in media in the present-day society was looked into. Among visual media, movies either can realistically speak for social atmospheres and realities or represent them satirically, comically or ironically. So far, studies on senior citizens and their lives through movies have not been carried out actively. But domestic movies after the 2000s have dealt with the theme of aging and old persons keenly. In this regard, this study examined diverse social discourses on senior citizens by analyzing various movies that dealt with gerontophobia and senior citizen's sexuality, death and suicide which were difficult to be comprised in visual contents so far. In addition, through a movie , the contradiction and absurdity of diverse problems of senior citizens in Korean society, which still exist but easily neglected by contemporaries were examined in-depth. In fast aging society, it is urgent and necessary to understand practical side effects of senior citizens and its seriousness, and then establish proper welfare policies from the aspect of social systems as well as change social perception of senior citizens in general. Because of this, the role of diversified/extended visual contents is far greater than ever.
